Top Five New Books for Dairy-Free Foodies in the Third Quarter of 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Top FiveIt is once again time to report back with an update on new special diet books, and I am happy to report that the options keep on coming. Since there are an increasing number to choose from (especially in categories like vegan and gluten-free), I have opted to shorten our quarterly post to just the highlights, our "top five" if you will. Some of these books I have had a chance to review myself while others made my list due to their high marks from other top reviewers.

And now, in no particular order, the Go Dairy Free "top five" new book list for July through September of 2010:

Cooking for Isaiah is a love story of Silvana Nardone's journey to develop great-tasting meals for her son, Isaiah, after he was diagnosed with food intolerances to gluten and dairy. The results of her efforts found in the pages of this book, are through 135 recipes that are not only easy to make but taste and look delicious, including S'mores Pancakes with Marshmallow Sauce, Double-Decker Toasted Cornbread and Spicy Greens Stack, Chicken and Waffles with Maple Bacon Gravy, Shrimp Pizza with Garlic Cream Sauce, and Chocolate Birthday Cake with Whipped Chocolate Frosting. Silvana Nardone is the founding Editor in Chief of Every Day with Rachael Ray, where she has been honored with the magazine industry's top awards since its launch in 2005. She is the magazine's "No-Recipe Zone" and "Sweet Spot" columnist.

The Divvies Bakery Cookbook comes straight from the dairy-, egg-, and nut-free facility of Divvies, a famed cupcake and cookie company. The author is Lori Sandler, founder of Divvies and the brains behind all of their recipes. Some of the tasty recipes featured in this cookbook include: Divvies Famous Chocolate Cupcakes (featured on the Martha Stewart Show!), Benjamin’s Chocolate Chip Cookies, Pick-Your-Berry Muffins, Extra Thick, Treasured-Filled Marshmallow Treats, “Ice Cream” Hash,  and Movie Night Popcorn. It is a very attractive and cute book too; definitely gift quality. Brief review here.

The Primal Blueprint Cookbook is filled with Paleo-focused recipes that are naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and sugar-free. Co-author Mark Sisson is a former world-class endurance athlete (2:18 marathon, 4th place Hawaii Ironman), has a BA degree in biology, founder and CEO of Primal Nutrition, Inc., owner/founder of MarksDailyApple.com a top-ranked health and fitness blog with 3 million page views per month, and author of The Primal Blueprint. Mark is credited with spearheading the worldwide 'Primal' health movement that challenges many well-accepted elements of conventional wisdom.

Vegan Unplugged is a go-to pantry cookbook for a variety of real-life scenarios. Eat well when you don't feel like cooking or don't have time to cook. Make tasty meals whenever you're on the road, visiting non-vegans, camping, or any time the power goes out. The instructions are simple and the meals are easy. Make great pantry cuisine dishes such as Almost-Instant Black Bean Chili, Pantry Pasta Salad, Fire-Roasted Blueberry Cobbler, and Sweet Treat Chocolate Truffles (135 recipes in total), specially developed by chef and author Robin Robertson. This is a comprehensive revision of Jon and Robin Robertson's 2005 book Apocalypse Chow.

The 30-Minute Vegan’s Taste of the East offers irresistible dishes from all over Asia—from India, Thailand, and China to Indonesia, Nepal, and Japan—virtually all doable in 30 minutes or less. It comes complete with at-a-glance cooking charts, key Asian pantry ingredients, all-new preparation techniques, and unique cooking tips. This is a sequel, if you will, to the The 30-Minute Vegan, also by award-winning chefs Mark Reinfeld and Jennifer Murray. I loved The 30-Minute Vegan and have heard raves about this one, so I see no reason not to highly recommend it.
