Marry Me Tofutti: Old School Frozen Desserts Still Stand Out Among Dairy-Free Suitors PDF Print E-mail

Tofutti Marry Me and Flowers Ice Cream BarsNever in a million years could I have expected that my husband (a former cream and cheese lover) would not only enjoy, but request Tofutti ice cream and frozen desserts …

When I was contacted by Tofutti to trial some of their frozen desserts, I wanted to say “no thank you,” really I did. These days taking on new product reviews is more time consuming than I can usually manage, and the last thing I needed was more sugary desserts in our home. I tried, I really tried to turn down the offer. My hands hovered over the keys, immobile. I sat, I kid you not, for (what seemed like an eternity) a solid two minutes just staring at that email. And suddenly, without control, I quickly typed “I’d be happy to” and hit send before logic could take control.

You see, her timing couldn’t have been more perfect. We had literally just come off of our first Tofutti experience. As you may have read, we wanted to (and quite frankly expected to) dislike their ice cream, but my husband and I loved it. We have sampled most brands of vegan ice cream on the market, and this, the humble and nearly original frozen vegan dessert, is the only one that he has actually suggested we purchase again.

So just one week later, our freezer held not one, but two packages of Tofutti Stick bars, the Marry Me Dessert Bars chocolate covered ice cream bars) and their newest product, Chocolate Covered Flowers. We truly enjoyed both (a little too much – they were all gone in just over a week!), but just like Celine and her husband, I preferred the Marry Me bars , but my husband gravitated to the Flowers.

With our previously announced love for Tofutti’s Vanilla Ice Cream, it came as no surprise to us that we loved it even more when enrobed in chocolate. Not much needs to be said here … the Marry Me Bars are creamy, dreamy vanilla ice cream (see my review for the Tofutti Vanilla Frozen Dessert here) coated in a semi-thick layer of semi-sweet chocolate. We were both quite happy. And really, one bar served as a perfectly fulfilling dessert for the day.

Tofutti Marry Me Ice Cream Bars

The Tofutti Chocolate Covered Flowers were a nice twist on your traditional ice cream bar. The ice cream had a very delicious fruity flavor with delightful flower essences that weren’t the least bit strange or funky. The ice creamy center simply worked. Of course, the chocolate coating was the icing on the cake – I only wish they had sprung for coating on the whole bar. They are about 2/3 coated, with the bottom 1/3 of the single stick bar being just the ice cream. What can I say, I like chocolate? These are half-size bars compared to the others, but you do get double the amount (12 bars) in each package.

Tofutti Flowers Ice Cream Bars

Keep in mind, some of the Tofutti products are made with hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup. I chose these stick bars and their vanilla ice cream, because at the least, they are free from these ingredients. Also, I opted to pass on the sugar-free varieties because they do use alternative sweeteners. But that is a personal choice. These bars are by no means virtuous (unless you are seeking to increase your soy consumption), so I recommend enjoying in moderation … but beware, they are addictive!

Product Notes:

Trace Dairy - Though the Tofutti products are certified kosher parve, they (both the ice cream and the chocolate coatings) are made on lines that are shared with dairy products. To achieve the parve status, those lines must be thoroughly cleaned between batch runs to remove dairy residue. Nonetheless, if you are dealing with a severe milk allergy, keep in mind that trace amounts could remain.

GMO Ingredients? – According to the Tofutti website, “All of our products use non-GMO soy protein. In addition, if available, we use other non-GMO ingredients, such as our tofu powder and maltodextrin.” This is good to read, but it would be great to see Tofutti release an organic version of their ice cream in North America like they have in the U.K.
