rhubarb teaCate O'Malley, A Nice Cuppa - For those looking for a caffeine bolster in the dog days of summer, a tall glass of iced tea might be just the ticket.  But instead of going with the same old, same old, try these new twists from Better Homes and Gardens and perk up your summertime tea:

Gluten Free / Casein Free School Supplies PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 08 August 2007
Pickel, My Two Boys - Now that we are all purchasing school supplies there are some of us who need to be especially careful when it comes to ingredients. There are many brands of school supplies that contain gluten, casein, and corn, dietary ingredients that I work very diligently to keep out of [my son's] diet.

Homemade Chocolate Italian Ice PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 07 August 2007
chocoice

Faith Kramer, Sugar Savvy & Blog Appetit - It was hot, muggy and steamy on the streets of New York during my recent visit. How did I keep my cool and enjoy a treat without suffering a chocolate meltdown? Why, I just indulged in a refreshing chocolate Italian ice. Italian ices are well known on the East Coast, especially in the Mid-Atlantic states.  They are smoother than granitas, softer than sorbets and just generally different.  They are also incredibly refreshing.

Cookbook Adventures - Four Books, One Kitchen PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 August 2007
Four CookbooksAlisa Fleming - Over the past few months, I must confess that my interest in cooking had all but vanished.  Somehow the effort required to seek out ingredients and spend that extra time in the kitchen to discover new recipes just didn't seem worth it.  Luckily, a surge of interesting (and well, not so interesting) cookbooks have renewed my curiosity in trialing new dishes.  With four new cookbooks in hand, I am once again enjoying the pleasures of a home cooked meal...

Raw Maple Pecan Ice Cream PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 August 2007

Raw Ice CreamJessica Su, Su Good Eats - Chocolate is my undoing year round, but ice cream is my undoing during the summer. I love nudging it with my tongue and letting it gracefully melt away. But every so often, a little voice nags me: “You shouldn’t eat so much ice cream because it’s bad…

…for the environment.” I bet you thought I was going to say it was bad for you. True, but did you know that one cup of milk yields 116 pounds of cow manure? Not only is manure trash, but its stinky gases contribute to global warming. It also takes 14 trillion gallons of irrigation water and 22 billion pounds of fertilizer to produce feed for U.S. livestock each year. The amount of energy it takes to produce that fertilizer could provide power to 1 million Americans a year.

Cool as a Cucumber PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 August 2007

Hannah, My Sweet Vegan & Bittersweet Blog.- Inching closer and closer to the dreaded return of exams and essays, August swoops down upon me like a bird of prey. Just a couple weeks of freedom are left for me, can you believe it? Zipping straight through a year that should have only just begun, it took all this time to feel at home in such conditions and now this uncooperative season wishes to dump me upside down on my head again. Being accustomed to daily berry pickings, yielding multiple plastic contains pilled to the brim with red rubies, it’s hard to watch as my seemingly endless supply of wild raspberries are finally beginning to dwindle. Looking frantically for a decent punnet of strawberries, even those most common finds are beginning to look a bit lack-luster. The signs are undeniable, and yet I can’t even remember when this “summer vacation” even began. Sure, the weather has played its part all this time, chasing me away from the thought of heating up the kitchen with threats of sweat, burns, and dreadfully frizzy hair. Can’t go outside but I’ll bake inside even if the oven isn’t on - What’s a hot, hungry vegan to do?

Tips to Traveling with Food Allergies & The Magic Kingdom! PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 July 2007
Gina Clowes over at Allergy Moms seems to be outdoing herself each month.  As her newsletter continues to mature, I am enthralled by her research.  This month's newsletter highlighted Disney's Special Dietary Needs Manager, Allergy Mom awards for Magic Kingdom accomodations, and 25 Cheap Tricks, Tips, & Clicks for Disney Travel.  The only bummer is that you have to sign up for the newsletter to view these stories, they aren't posted openly on this site... but once you do you should be able to access the summer fun!
