Perfect Pies for Everyone PDF Print E-mail

Pumpkin PieSo maybe that turkey doesn’t fit your vegan diet.  Perhaps those mashed potatoes are off limits due to a milk allergy or lactose intolerance.  And yes, that stuffing might not look Celiac-friendly.  But no one, and I mean no one, should have to go without dessert on Thanksgiving!  Whether you are on a diet or living with food allergies, there is most likely a pie for you among these selections…

Pumpkin Pie

Just Dairy-Free

Milk & Nut-Free Pumpkin Pie - If your only concerns are with milk (and/or nuts), then this completely homemade pumpkin pie should do the trick nicely.

Going with Tradition Pumpkin Pie - Use this crafty mom’s suggestion and substitute coconut milk for the evaporated milk in that good old Libby’s pumpkin pie recipe.

Vegan (Egg-Free, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free (check crust)) – Many pumpkin pie recipes harbor milk and eggs, but if you are allergic, or following a vegan diet, there are still many options.  Here are just a few top picks:

Virtually Fat Free – Susan over at Fat Free Vegan shares her Impossible Vegan Pumpkin Pie, which will do minimal damage to any low fat diet with just 153 calories and 1 gram of fat per serving.

Bryanna’s Vegan Pumpkin Pie – Bryanna believes in a tofu-free pumpkin pie.  While she does recommend a rich soymilk in this recipe, you can make it soy-free with the use of a non-soy milk alternative.  Hemp milk is a newcomer to the market with a good fat content for thickening.

Chocolate Pumpkin Pie – Soon to become a new holiday tradition, this versatile pie can be virtually allergen-free.  For starters, use the chocolate chips from Enjoy Life Foods for soy-free and food allergy-friendly (this recipe is tofu-free and milk alternative-free).  If you need a gluten-free pie, use the sandwich cookies from Kinnikinnick (K-Toos) or Mi-Del to make your cookie crust or ... speaking of gluten-free …

Natural Sweeteners, Gluten-Free / Casein-Free Too – All of the above pies can be GFCF with the right crust, which I will address below, but I must noted the Pumpkin Pie from Such Treasures, which also uses maple syrup and agave to sweeten, rather than granulated sugars.

Pumpkin Cheesecake – For a little un-tradition, you must take a peek at this luscious recipe from Susan’s Fat Free kitchen.  Okay, it isn’t fat free, but I think the few grams of fat per serving are well worth it, don’t you?

Maple Pecan – Ah, the magic of egg replacers.  Pick up a little Ener-G to make this pumpkin pecan hybrid pie.  Speaking of …

Pecan Pie

Chocolate Pecan Pie – Everything is better with chocolate.

Sweet Sue’s Pecan Pie – Really a classic pecan pie recipe, subbing dairy-free margarine for the butter.

Foolproof Vegan Pecan Pie – Back over at the Vegan Feast Kitchen, scroll down to see a pie that Bryanna claims is the most reliable pecan pie recipe.  Pecan pie without eggs can be insanely tricky!

Note: Pecan pies are obviously not suitable for nut allergies and most call for some type of margarine, which is typically not soy-free.  Though it may not yield those buttery results, you can try substituting Spectrum shortening, which is soy-free, for the margarine.

Apple Pie

Most apple pies, if using the right crust, will suit a dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, and vegan diet, so use your favorite (See below for some piecrust options) or for a little guidance, try one of these …

Sugar-Free Apple Pie – I am not a big fan of artificial sweeteners, so this pie using unsweetened apple juice for that dessert taste definitely caught my attention.

Was it the Dutch or the French? – For me, an apple pie isn’t at its best without that delicious crumb topping.  Try this version (using a dairy-free margarine such as Earth Balance) where the crumb mixture doubles as an easy pie crust (also vegan).

Sweet Potato Pie

I must admit, my experience with sweet potato pie is a tad limited, but one of these:

Tofu Magic

Springfield Classic

Good Ol’ Dairy-Free Pie

Dad’s Sweet Potato Pie

Low Fat & Soy-Free – It was hard to find a sweet potato pie that didn’t call for margarine.  This one isn’t technically dairy-free, but you can substitute your favorite milk alternative for the skim milk to no ill effect.

Pie Crusts

Fat-Free Oatmeal Cookie Crust – House your pies in this yummy homemade vegan crust that can easily be made gluten-free with the use of gluten-free oats.  Many brands are now available, including the ever-popular Bob’s Red Mill (check the label).

Fat-Free Grape Nuts Crust – Get creative with that leftover cereal!  Oh yes, the vegan, acorn squash pie filling that accompanies this recipe looks pretty tasty too.

Flaky Whole Wheat Pie Crust or Easy Pie Crust – These basic piecrust recipes are vegan, egg-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and can be soy-free by selecting the right oil (try extra-light olive oil or grapeseed oil).

Gluten-Free Pie Crust – You can use the gluten-free pantry mix, or try this made from scratch version.

3 Ingredient Vegan / GFCF Pie Crust – I can’t promise results, but it really doesn’t get any simpler than this one.

Oreo Cookie Crust – Most Oreo-like cookies are dairy-free and vegan and make an awesome pie crust.  I prefer the Newman’s Own brand (they also have a wheat-free version), but as mentioned above, the gluten-free K-Toos are delicious too.

Graham Cracker Crust – While most graham crackers are dairy-free, some graham crackers do contain dairy, so do check the labels. For a vegan graham cracker (free of honey) try Health Valley.

Whipped Topping & Ice Cream

Oh yes, and do not forget the topping!  You can get a wonderful array of dairy-free, vegan, and gluten-free frozen desserts at most major grocers these days.  I highly recommend the Whole Soy & Co. brand if you can find it, and any Turtle Mountain brand if you can’t (So Delicious, Purely Decadent, etc.).  For soy-free… check out Organic Rice Divine and Rice Dream.  These are available at most natural food stores and in the natural food section (a little freezer) of your local mega-grocer.

Whipped topping is a difficult one to find in stores.  If you can track down Soyatoo, then you are in luck.  If not, try one of these at-home recipes for dairy-free/vegan whipped “cream” or should I say crème?

Tofu-Based Whipped Cream

Almond Cream

Soy Whipped Cream (sweetened with maple syrup)

Coconut Whipped Cream

Well, hopefully that gives you enough options!  If not, send me an email and I will try to find your perfect pie!
