Our list of non-hydrogenated margarines and shortenings below should help to simplify the transition from butter-rich to dairy-free.  Keep in mind, oil (olive, avocado, vegetable, etc.) is all natural, often more heart healthy, and a fantastic tasting substitute for butter in almost every application.  Dip your bread in olive oil and vinegar, drizzle a touch of oil on popcorn and lightly sprinkle with salt or seasoning, and sauté a chicken breast in a teaspoon of oil.  Oil can even be used successfully in baking!
