Saturday, 29 July 2006
The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) has released new recommendations for reducing allergy risk in infants.  According to the ACAAI, when possible, new moms should breastfeed exclusively for six months to help protect their babies against developing food allergies.  During this time, solid foods of all types should be avoided.  In their statement, the ACAAI also put forth numerous suggestions for the introduction of top allergens (such as milk and eggs) in addition to staple foods.  Their committee recommendations include the following…

Vegan Diet Most Effective Against Diabetes Symptoms
Saturday, 29 July 2006
A new study has revealed that a simple vegan diet may be much more effective in promoting weight loss and reversing other type 2 diabetes symptoms than the diet previously recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).  Researchers noted that the vegan diet seemed to be easier for participants to follow, as there were no calories to count, portion sizes to measure, or carbohydrates to limit.  Unlike the ADA diet, the vegan diet did not need to be customized to the individual based upon weight, lifestyle, or other health factors.  As an added bonus, the only reported side effects of the vegan diet seemed to be positive ones, including weight loss and lowered cholesterol.

Autism Numbers Exceed Childhood Cancer
Friday, 14 July 2006

It wasn't long ago that this rarely mentioned disorder afflicted 1 in every 10,000 Americans.  Today, this number has jumped 60 fold, as 1 in every 166 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.  In fact, more children suffer from autism than childhood cancer.  Why the dramatic increase?  Some feel it is genetic, others see it as an environmental result from vaccinations, while a few think it is simply a reflection of the rapid growth in detection and diagnosis.  Regardless of the reason, autism is becoming a problem that can no longer be ignored.  The recently published article, "Autism: A Hidden Epidemic", shares interesting stories and information that help to bring the disorder into prospective.

Calcium vs Middle-Aged Spread
Friday, 14 July 2006

A recent study out of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle suggests a link between calcium supplementation and reduced weight gain for women in their 50's.  Calcium has been linked to weight loss in prior studies that have been utilized in various dairy board campaigns.  However, the evidence is beginning to suggest it is the calcium itself, rather than the source, which may be beneficial.  Researchers warn that calcium should not be used as a weight maintenance aid based on this study.  For more information on supplementation, head to our section on "Getting the Most from Calcium Supplements".  Read the full story on Reuters...
