So often I hear complaints about how dairy-free and vegan "ice creams" just aren't as fulfilling as "the real thing" ... and this assessment may not be way off base. Recently, it looked as though the new brands of coconut milk-based ice cream might fill that richness void ... but even with their high fat content, it seems these versions may not be as dense as they seem.
The founder of Alkemie Dairy-Free Ice Cream, a cashew-based "ice cream," conducted an at home experiment to discover the actual volume of various vegan ice creams on the market when compared to a truly dense pint of milk-based ice cream. He ran two tests looking at the volume and weight of the vanilla flavors of Organic Rice Divine, So Delicious Made with Coconut Milk Frozen Dessert, Alkemie Dairy-Free Ice Cream, and the gold standard, Ben & Jerry's. The results were quite surprising. Watch and learn just how much air you may be paying for in the brief video below ... (the experiment begins at about 1 min 40 seconds) .... |

First there was dark chocolate, then there was really good dark chocolate, and along came the “milk” chocolate and white chocolate, followed closely by the truffles. At this point, I thought we had seen it all in the dairy-free and vegan world, but the confection opportunities seem endless for Chocolatiers who continue to push the envelope with delicious new creations. My latest find: Chocolate Inspirations …
Naked Caramel Cups - Hmm, I’m not sure this would classify as a caramel, but oh-my-goodness was it addictive and delicious. As someone who likes their sugar hits in close to pure form (I’ll pass on the cake, but can I try a bit of that frosting?), I actually preferred this confection to a traditional caramel. It was softer, and in fact it only had a very slight chews … Read the full review But oh there is so much more ... |

Q: Linda - Is organic raw milk allowed on a dairy free diet? I am going dairy free to try and eliminate joint, muscle and back pain.
A: Alisa – If you are trialing a true dairy-free diet, then no, organic raw milk would not be suitable. It is still a dairy product. But raw milk does deserve to be addressed, even by dairy-free consumers. I do discuss raw milk in Go Dairy Free: The Guide and Cookbook, as well as addressing the various types of milk on the market (A2 milk, lactose-free milk, soymilk, goat milk, etc.) to help clarify what dairy really is and who the different milks (whether dairy or non-dairy based) may be suitable for. However, I will briefly elaborate on raw milk here. Many raw milk enthusiasts feel that the real problem with milk is not the pure product itself, but the changes it undergoes in processing (pasteurization, ultra-pasteurization, and homogenization) and the poor and contaminated quality from improperly treated cows (grain-fed diet, antibiotics, hormones, etc.). They believe that raw organic milk (note that raw simply means unpasteurized, it may not actually be organic) has health benefits for disease prevention and things such as curing infections, and that some who are milk allergic and/or lactose intolerant can actually tolerate raw milk ... |

I do consume probiotics each day, and recently became more diligent about it due to a round of antibiotics, so I was intrigued when I was contacted about Attune Foods. They make chocolate bars infused with probiotics. Hmm, eat chocolate – help tummy; that is a wonderful sounding relationship in theory. How was it in practice?
Attune places the following claim on their box: “Try 1 attune bar daily for 14 days – if you don’t feel a difference it’s FREE.” I did feel a difference, and I think the product holds merit, but there are definitely some pros and cons to consider. See my Full Review on Dairy-Free & Fit to read about my experience and findings with these delicious supplements, and for a chance to win your own 14-day supply of Attune Chocolate Bars! That's right - there are three non-dairy / vegan flavors of Attune Probiotic Chocolate Bars - Dark, Raspberry Dark, and Coffee Bean - and the winner can choose which two flavors (they come in boxes of 7 - a week's supply) they would like to sample. I chose the Dark and Dark Raspberry and both were quite tasty. Which will you choose? Enter the Attune Chocolate Giveaway Now! |

Sweet Sundays: True, my book has well over 200 recipes, but I think it is something of a milestone when a blog exceeds 100 recipes - each with photo, story, and dedicated post. Since Go Dairy Free the website is a conglomerate of information and recipes from various sources (myself, other bloggers and authors, etc.), I decided a couple of years ago to set up a place to log just my dairy-free recipes that are published on the Internet - and One Frugal Foodie was born. Since writing Go Dairy Free: The Guide and Cookbook, I have come up with over 100 more recipes and posted them to this blog (at last count, the recipe index was up to 106 individual dairy-free recipes). Okay, there are quite a few more recipes in my arsenal waiting to be released, but more on that soon ...
For now, to celebrate this accomplishment, I thought it best to share one of the Sunday-worthy recipes from that I would classify as a "reader's favorite." This is one of the recipes on One Frugal Foodie that has received the most emails and comments from pleased viewers who have tried it. Like all of my recipes, I like to note what special diets it caters to, and these scrumptious Cinnamon Rolls are vegan (dairy-free and egg-free), nut-free, and optionally soy-free. Enjoy ... |
