When viewer Mary sent in an inquiry desperately seeking a good coffee creamer, I pulled out all of the options I could think of. You can view my full response to Mary (with additional creamer recommendations) in last week's post "Is there a good dairy-free substitute for coffee creamer?"
Mary took one of my suggestions, MimicCreme, and put it to the test. She was kind enough to report back too, so that we could share her findings with you here: "The MimicCreme arrived from Amazon.com today. The verdict: AMAZING!!! I believe that this product is one that will enable those who would genuinely like to go vegan to do so. I can see utilizing this in so many dishes that call for fresh dairy cream; MimicCreme is unsurpassed in texture -- I didn't think I'd ever find anything that complimented good coffee the way organic and/or raw milk does ... |

I know, I am a bit late for the chocolate-rich holiday of Easter, but really, does chocolate season ever stop? Below is a full review on the delicious rice "milk" chocolate and dark chocolate bars from Enjoy Life Foods. Lets just say I have a new love. If you decide to gives these bars a go yourself, and can find them in stores, make sure to print up any available coupons from the Enjoy Life website before heading to market. Okay, onto the review ...
My latest splurge: Enjoy Life’s Rice Milk Chocolate Bars, donning the name “Boom Choco Boom.” I have sampled most of the new dairy-free “milk” chocolates on the market, and I truly love them all. Some are quite sweet, hitting on my cravings for white chocolate, while some are rich with cocoa buttery goodness. But the Boom Choco Boom rice milk bar strikes that perfect balance, hitting my taste buds just right with every bite. The bar comes in four sizable segments ... |

The big day is Saturday, May 29, 2010, but the creators of the Multi-City Vegan Waffle Party welcome participants throughout May and June.
So what does it take to join the Global Vegan Waffle Party? "It’s as easy as signing up, inviting over a few friends, having them bring creative toppings, and baking (or even letting them bake!) some tasty waffles [see links to great dairy-free / egg-free waffle recipes below]. Or, you can make it a large and impressive production if you’d like. The idea is to inspire awareness and change in a fun and relatively easy way." 2008 had parties in 10 cities, 2009 in 17 cities, and for 2010 the big goal is a 40-city waffle party. Even if you aren't into throwing an actual party, the event is a great excuse to trial out some vegan waffle recipes with your family or even solo (waffles freeze fantastically for a quick pop-in-the-toaster breakfast) ... |

Q: Russ - I understand the extent of what restaurants and easy recipes I can make and enjoy, but how can I keep from compromising my dairy-free habits with the dairy-needs of a girl on a date? In other words, how can I dine dairy-free while she eats with dairy?
A: Alisa - In the early stages of a relationship, friendship, or even when you are trying to break your family into the idea of your special diet, most people don’t want to make waves. Those “first” moments are awkward enough without throwing wrenches in about what you can and can’t eat. Plus, you may not want to inconvenience your dining companion’s food choices. To avoid compromising my own health while ensuring that everyone gets to enjoy what they want, these are the general rules I follow when dining with others: 1) Suggest a restaurant you are familiar and comfortable with. What is most important is the company and conversation, but good food doesn’t hurt either. Choose a reliable place where you know the food is good and you have pre-selected options to choose from. If you have several “go-to” places, offer them up to your dining companion to give her a choice and to get some insight into her likes and dislikes. |

This recipe was sent in by Erin, a Go Dairy Free viewer. She states, "I found this recipe while searching for a GOOD chocolatey treat, and just tweaked the ingredients to suit my needs. I am soy-free in addition to dairy-free, so a butter substitute such as margarine could be used in place of the shortening."
These cookies sounded far too decadent for us to ignore, and I felt a Sweet Sundays feature was in order. This cookie recipe does contain eggs. For a dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, soy-free, vegan, and scrumptious double chocolate cookie option (perfect for the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale), try the Fudge Brownie Cookies recipe in Go Dairy Free (pictured at left) - they are a family and party favorite. As Erin also noted, to keep the cookie recipe below soy-free, you will need to opt for a palm shortening (from Spectrum Organics or Tropical Traditions) or you can trial Earth Balance Soy-Free for a buttery taste, which I find performs very well in baked goodies. |
