Granted, I didn't need a special study to understand that milk allergies are not always outgrown during infancy. My milk allergy has twisted and turned through various symptoms, yet it has persisted into adulthood. However, it seems that I am further from alone than once thought. While prior estimates had stated that roughly 80% of milk allergies are outgrown by the age of 6, a new study out of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland claims that these numbers are far too optimistic. Rates of milk allergy resolution were found to be 19% by age 4 years, 42% by age 8 years, 64% by age 12 years, and 79% by 16 years. |

Shelly Butcher, Well Fed on the Town - Vegan baked goods are an odd lot. Without butter and eggs, they are like photocopies of a photocopy of a photo–pale imitations of the original. I do enjoy trying my hand at vegan baked goods, and have managed a pretty decent cornbread. But I’ve wondered about those vegan goodies one sees in Bay Area markets. Are they tasty? Do they come close to their butter- and egg-laden cousins? Out of curiosity, I bought a sampling of locally produced vegan cookies and taste tested them all. Cookies are rated on a scale of one to five chips. |

Foods Matter, November 2007 - Michelle Berriedale-Johnson attempts to chart a course through the complexities of allergy testing - Like so much in the field of allergy, testing is bedevilled by terminology. Procedures as varied as a RAST blood test for peanut allergy carried out in a hospital allergy clinic, a postal IgG food intolerance blood prick test or a health food store Vega food-intolerance test are all referred to as ‘allergy tests’ - thus invoking the fury of mainstream allergists who point out, quite correctly, that most of these tests are completely useless for diagnosing classic, Type 1 immediate hypersensitivity. |

Hannah Kaminsky, My Sweet Vegan - If there’s anything I like more than good old granola, it’s definitely granola bars. I know, many prepackaged varieties are complete gimmicks and rip-offs, because what could be easier than sticking those dry ingredients together? Plus, the increase in cost can become astronomical when you factor in the extra “labor” and excessive packaging itself… Thankfully, I happened to have plenty of raw materials still on my hands, so I decided to cut out the middleman in this situation and just use what I had on hand to make a cohesive pan of chewy granola bars... By Barb Nicoletti - When I was asked to review The Very Non-Dairy Christmas, I was delighted. I like many of you have children with food allergies. Finding someone or something that they can relate to whether it is real or make believe is special.
The magic of Christmas is already in full force. The catalogs have begun to arrive by the armload; the television advertisements have been out for many weeks now. When you venture to the stores the Halloween decorations are all stored away until next year and the Christmas decorations are everywhere. My children have already started asking “Momma when is Santa Coming." Christmas has always been special to me too; Santa had brought me a beautiful bundle of joy. So when the book arrived I eagerly gathered my son who is 4.5 yrs old and my daughter who will be 6 ... Read on... |
