Eating Delicious Vegan Chocolate for Animal Rescue Equals a Win-Win Situation
Wednesday, 03 March 2010

Rescue Chocolate - Vegan and Dairy-FreeWhen I was contacted by Rescue Chocolate about their cause, I admit to being a bit overspent with reviews, news requests, and other GDF business … but after looking at their website, there was no way I could say no. First, I confess, it is hard to turn down chocolate samples (though I have been known to do it). But second, Rescue Chocolate donates 100% of net proceeds to animal rescue organizations around the country.

Everything about this company is adorable … the cause, the packaging, the chocolate. When the shipment arrived I was seriously overwhelmed with cuteness; the deliciously rich taste was simply icing on the cake.

The first thing we sampled was the Bow Wow Bon Bons. Meticulously enclosed in a little reusable case with magnetic closure, the bon bons themselves were petite two bite delights with big flavor and hand-crafted appeal. The box contains four chocolate treats: PB&J, 72%, Cinnamon, and Salted Peanut ...

New Blood Test May Help Identify "Baked" Versus "Unbaked" Milk Allergies
Tuesday, 02 March 2010

In 2008, a study reported in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology found that roughly 70% of egg-allergic individuals were able to tolerate egg in baked goods. Though raw eggs or eggs cooked in other manners (scrambled, french toast, etc.) still remained a problem, the "extensive heat" from baking caused enough "destruction" of the egg proteins that the allergic antibodies were not able to recognize them in several of the study participants.

Of course, we have wondered if the same may be true for milk, and it seems to be. A similar study done with milk in the same year yielded relatively equivalent results.

Yet, using a food challenge to identify "baked" and "unbaked" allergies can be difficult and even dangerous for those with severe food allergies. Which is why those diligent food allergy scientists have been working on a blood test that may help those with a serious allergic reaction to milk identify if they can tolerate baked-milk products ...

Tasty, Versatile, Gluten-Free, Dairy-free, and Uber-Crunchy; What More Could We Want in a Cereal?
Tuesday, 02 March 2010

Enjoy Life Foods Perky's Cereal I used to eat cereal every single morning … cold or hot, I had to have it. We all change our habits though, and these days I am on a breakfast smoothie kick, with the occasional oat waffles or rice cakes for a change. Nonetheless, I still keep some “healthy” cereals on hand for cooking, baking, and no bake needs that always seem to arise.

One go to cereal is organic crispy rice cereal, particularly for making my homemade granola bars. But when I discovered the Enjoy Life Perky’s Crunchy Cereals, a fun new option entered my life. In a way, these are similar to crispy rice cereal, and can be used in their place in recipes or your morning bowl, but really, they are quite different. Though semi-puffed, they aren’t really hollow, they have a mightier (yet still forgiving) crunch, and they are a bit heartier in taste and structure. I likened them to a cross between Rice Krispies and Grape Nuts ...

Ask Alisa: How does calcium in milk alternatives measure up to the calcium in milk?
Monday, 01 March 2010

Go Dairy Free Product Lists - Non Dairy Milk AlternativeQ: Lisa (inquiry via the Go Dairy Free Facebook Fan Page) - Is the calcium carbonate they add to almond milk as sufficient as the calcium in cow's milk?

A: Alisa – According to medical reports it is very close, if not just as good. Keep in mind, calcium absorption depends on many different factors. A myriad of different vitamins and minerals aid in calcium absorption (while some can hinder it), and various factors from the health of our guts to exercise to age can also affect how well calcium is absorbed and utilized.

Since we could dedicate an entire book to the topic of calcium, we will put these additional factors aside, and briefly address the types of calcium you are inquiring about specifically ...

Sunday, 28 February 2010

Dairy-Free, Vegan, Gluten-Free and Food Allergy Friendly Chocolate Easter BunniesThis Sweet Sunday we are taking a recipe detour to announce our new Dairy-Free and Vegan Chocolate Easter Bunny page. Last week the chocolate Easter bunny announcements rolled in for Divvies, Premium Chocolatiers, and Guardian Angel, so we knew it was time to get moving on our updates. Besides, what could be sweeter than over a dozen chocolate bunnies hand-crafted specifically with vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, and other special diets in mind?

The new Easter Bunny page will be updated annually and is included in the category "Parties, Holidays, Entertaining, and Travel" in our Food & Grocery section on Go Dairy Free. This category has been around for a while, but we are in the process of updating and formatting it with a new structure and an ongoing expansion of links to relevant articles on our site. You can expect to see stories and information for all of the major holidays, recipes and tips for special events (like birthday parties!), and special diet travel advice for popular destinations.
