A fabulous banana sale hit my local grocer this week, "forcing" me to load up with close to a dozen bunches. After a morning of slicing, flash-freezing, and packaging the bananas for later use, I stopped short, leaving out a bunch or two for some baking endeavors. After all, with so many inexpensive bananas, who could can resist the temptation of banana bread? ... |

I grew up in Portland, well, a very close suburb of the main city. I ventured into town often for the Saturday Market, festivals, and summer work. However, at that time, taking in the culture of the city itself was not forefront on my agenda. Now, returning as a visitor rather than a resident, I was fascinated by the wonderful diversity of people, from a punk subculture to hoards of biking fitness junkies. Yet, my biggest preoccupation was with the incredible array of restaurants. Since it had been so many years, and we only had one day in the city itself, I decided to do some research before the trip on where to go for lunch... |

September has been proclaimed Whole Grains Month by the Whole Grains Council (who better to do it?). In honor of the event they are launching a new website and educational events, but, we were most intrigued by their "Top Ten School Lunch Ideas." These kid-tested favorites are of course adult-friendly too, and most were already dairy-free. We made just a few slight modifications to meet with the Go Dairy Free mantra, and added a couple of comments along the way ... |

For all of our gluten-free / dairy-free viewers out there, I have some wonderful news… Oats are back! For years Celiacs and those living with gluten intolerance have had to forsake oats in the name of wheat cross-contamination. But now those grains of goodness are back, thanks to several very conscientious manufacturers... |
