Parma! Vegan Parmesan (Vegan, Gluten-Free, Soy-Free) PDF Print E-mail

Who would have guessed that the bold flavor of Parmesan could be so easy to replace?  Cheese in excess was rarely my desire, but the extra oomph that Parmesan can offer was something I certainly missed.  When this vegan Parmesan came within my radar I was excited, but skeptical.

Sold in a handy shaker, Parma! contains only raw organic walnuts, nutritional yeast (the cheesy component), and Celtic sea salt.  The texture is along the line of finely grated Parmesan, while the overall look strays a bit from the norm.  But, don’t let the simplicity or the image fool you.  This three-ingredient topper packs a cheesy punch that will liven up any mundane meal.

I went for the traditional first, spaghetti.  Then, I moved onto cheese-less pizza, gnocchi, baked potatoes, steamed vegetables…it seemed as though Parma! had no limits.  Soon it was making nightly appearances.  That is until the tragic day arrived…when I ran out.  I must say that it lasted much longer than I would have expected from a 3oz container.  Particularly considering my rather generous hand on the pizza.

I only found one application that didn’t quite suit, popcorn.  The flavor was great, but the weight of the finely chopped walnuts required more oil than I was willing to apply to keep them from tumbling to the bottom of the bowl.

In terms of nutrition, Parma! runs neck and neck with Parmesan cheese in calories (25), fat (1.5g), and protein (2g) per one Tablespoon serving.  Parma! manages to break into the lead though, with 1/3 the amount of sodium and a good dose of B complex vitamins (including B12).

  • Pros:  All-natural; Made without soy, gluten, or any animal products (vegan); Low in sodium; Good source of B vitamins; Bold cheesy flavor; A little goes a long ways
  • Cons:  I am not sure if mine was defective, but the “sprinkle” side of the lid would not close once opened

Recommended For:

  • Pasta
  • Pizza
  • Baked Potatoes
  • Anything that could use a Parma Boost

Where to Buy:

  • Online - Visit the company website, www.EatintheRaw.com for links to online retailers
