WholeSoy & Co. Soy Yogurt (Organic, Vegan, Gluten-Free) **Top Pick** PDF Print E-mail

~~ 5 Star Selection from Go Dairy Free ~~

This product was chosen by our staff as a top pick for quality and taste.

Who says giving up dairy is difficult?  If yogurt has been one of your dietary staples, then Whole Soy & Co. could make your transition into the non-dairy world virtually seamless.  We trialed three flavors of Whole Soy & Co.’s soy yogurt, and took notes on the taste, texture, and nutritional merits.  I must admit, the results were somewhat surprising…

There was not a vegan in our tasting group, yet we each preferred the thick and creamy texture of this soy yogurt to the gelatin-like consistency found in most other soy and dairy yogurts.  Some brands use gelatin specifically, while others use a vegetable-based pectin, but Whole Soy & Co. uses rice and cornstarches, a welcomed change in our opinion.

The taste was undeniably yogurt.  Slightly tart, yet very well sweetened with organic evaporated cane juice.  The fruit yogurts are flavored with…get this…real fruit.  To be honest, I wouldn’t have guessed these yogurts were all natural, let alone organic.  They tasted just as sweet and “indulgent” as some of the mainstream yogurts, such as Yoplait, in my opinion.

The dairy-dedicated often argue that alternatives don’t measure up to the “real thing” from a nutrition perspective, so we decided to do a little research.  Oddly enough, when put side by side, Whole Soy & Co’s yogurt appeared to be healthier than the mainstream dairy yogurts we reviewed (Dannon & Yoplait).  For example, when we compared Whole Soy & Co.’s vanilla soy yogurt to Dannon’s All-Natural vanilla yogurt, Whole Soy had more fiber and calcium, the same amount of protein, half the sugar, a quarter of the sodium, and no saturated fat or cholesterol.  With stats like these, Whole Soy & Co. may just bring a few new recruits over to the non-dairy side.

Flavors We Trialed:

  • Mixed Berry – It was a bit sweeter than I remembered yogurt being, but tasty nonetheless.  The berries are mostly blended in, but there are very small bits throughout.  For my taste buds, a touch less sugar would give me that “I just ate a healthy snack” feeling.
  • Apricot Mango – True to flavor, I could taste both the mangos and apricots with each bite.  Like the mixed berry there were small bits of actual fruit throughout.  Some small chunks of mango left unblended would really kick this up a notch.  For some added nutrition, we stirred in a Tablespoon of ground flaxseed.  It brought down the sweetness a touch, and gave me that healthy feeling.
  • Cherry - Small bits of cherry throughout ensured us that this perfectly pink yogurt was in fact a natural product.  The flavor was sweet, but not too sweet, and we didn’t notice a chalky aftertaste with this variety.

Pros:  Organic ingredients; Vegan; Gluten-Free; Natural flavors; Kosher certified; Pre-stirred and ready to eat; Great source of probiotics for digestive health; Low in sodium; Free of cholesterol and saturated fat
Cons:  One taster did note the tell-tale soybean flavor; Slight chalky aftertaste, but this too seems to be a common theme among yogurts; Does not seem to have the B vitamins and potassium that dairy yogurt may provide

Recommended For:

  • A Dairy Yogurt Replacement for Eating and Recipes
  • Breakfast (alone, with granola or cereal, etc.)
  • Snacks

Where to Buy:

  • In Stores – Whole Foods and Mainstream Grocers throughout the U.S.

WholeSoy yogurt Deelicious!!
WholeSoy yogurt is my favorite non-dairy yogurt.
I use the Plain flavor. I add my own fruit and put it in my smoothies and protein shakes.

The consistency is deelightfully creamy and it stays that way.
Other brands like 'Silk" are runny and watery and tastes bitter to me. (Plain)

Try it for your self...

WholeSoy yogurt Deelicious!!
I have tried every soy "yogurt" at my local health-food store and this is the only one that even reminds me of dairy yogurt. It is absolutely delicious, although it does have a bit of a beany after-taste. I love the plain and the vanilla, especially topped with fresh fruit. I even gave it to my husband, who loves dairy yogurt, and he didn't realize it was not dairy.

Yummy

WholeSoy yogurt Deelicious!!
What's the texture like? Every soygurt I've tried seems to have a grainy texture that makes it disgusting....

WholeSoy yogurt Deelicious!!
I thought it was nice and smooth, although I must say I've never really encountered much "grainy" soy yogurt at all, so perhaps you just has a very different palate.
