Amazing Grass Berry Green SuperFood (Vegan, Gluten-Free, Soy-Free) PDF Print E-mail

Amazing? Why yes it is. But to be honest, after trailing numerous drink powders, from protein-packed to supplement-worthy, it is still hard for me to pinpoint the exact qualities that make this product so amazing. It just is.

Amazing Grass Berry Green SuperFood

Within minutes of receiving the Amazing Grass canister filled with this green powder, I busted it open and dished a scoop into some ice cold water for both my husband and I. We had just finished our workout, so its arrival couldn’t have been timelier. I really didn’t expect much, since healthy drink powders with no added sugars aren’t usually the stuff dreams are made of … but, it wasn’t bad. It had a slightly sweet berry flavor that I had no trouble polishing off. My husband said it tasted “wheaty, but not bad.” Trust me, this is high praise from my greens-hating husband. And, he actually finished his glass! When consumed this way, my only complaint was that it did tend to settle, but a few shakes as I gulped away kept it in the mix.

Yet, in my opinion, this is really a smoothie perfecter, not a pure greens drink. For one thing, it has a very low calorie profile. Great as a supplement, but it won’t suffice when you actually need a good dose of carbs, protein, or fat to keep you going. Plus, it actually enhanced my smoothies rather than taking away from them as so many greens do. Whenever I had a smoothie where the fruit needed just a little dose of extra sweetness, Amazing Grass saved the day. Though it contains no added sugars, nor any stevia, one heaping scoop added brightness and just enough flavor to push my smoothie into yum. My husband could still detect the “wheatiness” when I added it to his smoothies, but since it was hard to hide the green tint when I did add it, I couldn’t verify if this was just in his head. I noticed a slight textural difference, but it wasn’t grainy, like hemp powders tend to be.

Of course, beyond the taste, there is its virtuous profile as you can see in the ingredients below. And to offer some clarity to the ingredients, I have some information from the Amazing Grass website: “A full spectrum of alkalizing green superfoods, antioxidant rich fruits, and support herbs unite with organic Acai and Goji berries to provide a powerful dose of whole food nutrition with a delicious berry taste. Complete with pre & probiotics and digestive enzymes to ensure rapid nutrient absorption and healthy digestion.”

Ingredients: Berry Green SuperFood: All natural and organic ingredients include organic wheat grass, organic barley grass, organic alfalfa, organic spirulina, organic spinach, organic chlorella (cracked cell-wall), organic broccoli, organic acai from Sambazon, organic maca, organic carrot, organic beet, raspberry, organic rose hips, pineapple, organic goji berries, green tea, acerola cherry, organic flax seed powder, apple pectin fiber, F.O.S. (from chicory root), L. acidophilus, alpha and beta amylase, protease, lipase, lactase, cellulase, siberian eleuthero root, peppermint and other natural flavors.
Note: This is barley grass, not the grain, so it is gluten-free! Also, lactase is not a dairy product.

Though I am not a big supplement fan, I quickly became addicted to the Berry SuperFood. Something about it just made me feel good. Was it more energy, was my tummy tamed, or did my head become clear? Perhaps, but for now I can just say it tasted and felt like something that should be a part of my diet every day. See below for just one of the many beverages I spiked with Amazing Grass.

I have also trialed the Chocolate Green SuperFood and their new Amazing Grass Bars, both of which I absolutely love! I have yet to trial any of the other Amazing Grass products (they are on my list!), but they do have meal replacers and other healthy bites to choose from! I have spotted all of the Amazing Grass products in natural food stores, but you can also purchase them online.

P.S. ~ Amazing Grass, those "sippy cups" (pictured above) as my husband calls them are awesome. Way to go with the perfect carry along container for healthy beverages.

Amazing Pom-Mango Smoothie
Pomegranate Mango SmoothieThis smoothie has a delightful combination of sweet and tangy to wake up your taste buds. It is my latest addiction. The picture shown here is pre-Amazing Grass. I love this smoothie so much more with the Amazing Grass, but the brown-ish-green color wasn’t exactly picture-worthy. Ignore the color, love the flavor.

½ Cup Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
½ Cup Pomegranate Juice (I used POM wonderful)
12 Frozen Mango Chunks
1 Scoop Amazing Grass Berry SuperFood
2 T Protein Powder of choice (optional)
Sweetener (optional - I don’t use)
4 Large Chunks of Ice (optional)

Combine everything but the ice in your blender, and whiz until smooth. If you would like it thicker and/or frostier, add the ice (pulsing at first) and blend until smooth.

Almond Smoothie Option: For more of a meal, add 1 Tablespoon of Almond Butter, and sprinkle with a few sliced almonds if desired.

Yields 1 big and delicious serving
