By Alisa Fleming - So what does powdered wheat grass and broccoli taste like? Really, it is pretty good. Since my addiction to smoothies ensued, I have become fascinated with healthful drink mixes. As you can see in the beverage reviews, most of those trialed to date have a hemp component. However, Superfood has more of a greens focus, as the name implies. This turned out to be a big benefit in terms of taste and texture, while it certainly did no harm to the nutritional profile. I was elated to find that this mix comes unsweetened. Ready to customize as you like it, using whatever sweetener suits your diet best, or none at all, this is purely a cocoa and nutrient rich mix. Merely opening the handy canister created a strong first impression. The fine powder was pleasant looking and my nose was immediately met with the most delightfully rich cocoa scent. Trial #1: I decided to try it double cocoa no sugar as a first experiment, combining a scoop of Superfood with a cup of unsweetened chocolate almond milk. Admittedly, it was a less than stellar flavor combination. The cocoa taste was rich and pure, but relatively flat with no complex flavors added. In this case, a regular almond or soymilk with that hint of sweetness (or a teaspoon or two of sweetener added) would work best. Trial #2: Giving into a touch of sugar, I sampled a glass of plain rice milk (possessing a bit of evaporated cane juice) with a scoop of Superfood. This was definitely a winning drink. While the hemp based mixes I had mentioned prior were a bit gritty, Superfood was much closer to an "instant breakfast" dissolving quite thoroughly in my drink with only that slight powdery finish, which is nearly impossible to avoid with any powdered beverage mix. The cocoa flavor was very pleasant… I could easily see myself polishing off the entire canister in an instant rice beverage fashion, but… Trial #3: …I was still holding out hope for some sugar-free goodness. How would this mix hold up in a nice and simple smoothie? It was time to break out the big guns, my new favorite Almond “Milk” Shake. One frozen banana, 2/3 cup unsweetened chocolate almond milk, 2 tablespoons of almond butter, and this new addition, one scoop of Superfood (in place of the flaxseed). It was wonderful! The Superfood actually took my beverage up a small notch, creating a rich chocolate flavor that the chocolate almond milk was unable to sustain alone. Lest you think such a smoothie would be too much of a nut butter indulgence, a slight modification creates a low calorie and low fat smoothie to boot… Trial #4: … Omitting the almond butter turned out to be an excellent option for my last minute pre-workout breakfast. One frozen banana, one scoop of Green Superfood, and 2/3 to one cup of plain unsweetened almond milk… excellent! I was able to down this tasty concoction just a half hour before my workout with not a single side cramp, and enough energy to keep me going until I arrived home. All in all, it was just 150 calories or so, just a few small grams of fat, and a load of nutrients.
Yes, of course, what would a Superfood mix be without a wonderful nutritional profile. Check out this ingredient list: All natural and organic ingredients include organic wheat grass, organic barley grass, organic alfalfa, organic spirulina, organic spinach, organic chlorella (cracked cell-wall), organic broccoli, organic dutch cocoa, organic redwood cocoa, organic cacao, natural chocolate flavoring, organic acai from Sambazon, organic maca, organic carrot, organic beet, raspberry, organic rose hips, pineapple, green tea, acerola cherry, organic flax seed powder, organic oat fiber, apple pectin fiber, F.O.S. (from chicory root), L. acidophilus, alpha and beta amylase, protease, lipase, lactase, cellulase, siberian eleuthero root, peppermint and organic sea salt. My Extra Notes & Tips: - Superfood has built in prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes.
- Amazing Grass utilizes a very low temperature dehydration process that keeps fruits and vegetables minimally processed and 'raw'. This ensures the antioxidant and phytonutrient power remains intact.
- While this is definitely my top pick for drink / nutritional beverage mixes thus far, their recommendation to enjoy three scoops (drinks) a day, is a bit out of my budget. Nonetheless, I would like to have some of this on hand to spike my drink or smoothie on a daily basis.
- One canister provides about 30 servings.
Where to Purchase: I have seen several Amazing Grass products at both Whole Foods and Wild Oats, yet I believe they are sold at many natural food retailers. See the Amazing Grass website for a store locator, or to purchase direct online. Most of the Amazing Grass powders and mixes are also available from Amazon. Quote this article on your site
