Do you ever find yourself out rushing around, on the road traveling, or simply at the grocery store and suddenly dying of thirst? While I do try to reach for water most of the time, sometimes you just want a little more flavor. The problem is, most of the convenience drinks are loaded with sugar or contain that dreaded high fructose corn syrup along with some nice colors and artificial flavors. My husband and I typically stare at the cold drink case for about ten minutes, and walk away empty handed or with that plain old bottled water.
But lately, there have been a few chilled tea makers that are going the all natural route, and one of them is POM Wonderful. This famous pomegranate producer has a full line of iced teas, which merge their 100% pomegranate juice with naturally brewed iced tea, a wee bit of sugar (fructose) and another interesting fruit for a lightly sweetened, antioxidant-rich concoction. I had the opportunity to trial four of these POMx “Super Teas,” Lychee, Peach Passion, Blackberry, and Light Wildberry. The Blackberry was definitely my favorite. It merged blackberry and pomegranate juices with black tea for a deep flavor that I found particularly intriguing. It also seemed to be the least sweet of the bunch, but just sweet enough, relying a bit more on the overall complexity of the ingredients rather than just sugar. The Peach Passion and Lychee were also delicious. My husband voted for the Peach Passion, which was a sweeter and milder drink, since it was a peach, pomegranate, and white tea blend. The Lychee fell between the two in strength with a green tea base, but the deliciously ripe flavor of lychees (definitely a sweet fruit!) did blend nicely with the bitter notes of the tea and the pomegranate juice. I hesitated with the Light Wildberry since the only sugar substitute I ever venture is stevia, and even that is used in microscopic amounts. And unfortunately, as expected, I didn’t like this one. I could definitely taste the sweetener, and the overall taste fell flat on my taste buds. But, hey, I am a pure sugar kind of girl, and will definitely continue to keep an eye out for the non-light POMx Teas when I am running about. My only qualm (and question) is why I spotted the teas at a quickie-mart in Tonopah, Nevada (yes, it is even more remote than it sounds), but my local Whole Foods doesn’t stock them! This is a third party review by Alisa Fleming, author of Go Dairy Free: The Guide & Cookbook. For more information on these iced teas, see the POM Wonderful website.
