Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets by Brenda Davis, RD and Vesanto Melina, MS, RD

If you are even considering a raw food diet, don’t make another move until you get Becoming Raw. This well-researched tomb covers everything from the history of raw foodism to nutritional concerns to menus and starter recipes. Written by two registered dieticians, you might expect this book to be filled with charts, research, and nutrient discussions – and you would be right. Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina leave no stone unturned.

But I think what was so refreshing about this book was that it wasn’t one-sided. They discuss the benefits and pitfalls of both raw and cooked food – in fact, after reading this book I had no desire to be 100% raw, it didn’t seem like the healthiest option for me. But rather, it did help me to consider the nutritional value of many foods and to incorporate more raw foods into my diet.

To try to summarize everything within this book would be a near impossibility – seriously, they discuss nutritional topics that never would have occurred to me. You will simply need to trust me that this is one of the best resources (if not THE best resource) for anyone living or considering a raw food lifestyle – and it seems this even includes “high raw” enthusiasts who consume at least 50% raw food by weight.

Also, keep in mind that this is a book specifically for the raw vegan diet. It doesn’t discuss raw foods that are not plant-based (ie eggs and fish).

Though the focus of this book isn’t on the recipes, I couldn’t resist trying a couple out … or at least using them as guides. I made the …

Pink Cadillac

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets

It was a very basic smoothie of mango, strawberries, and orange juice. Loved the concept but I’m still not wild about OJ in smoothies. Overall good – I just upped the fruit to taste.

Liquid Gold Dressing

Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets

I had to make a few substitutes based on what I had on hand, but stayed fairly true to the recipe. The end result was unique but good. It added a little punch to an otherwise ordinary salad, along with a little nutrition.
