In Short Order by Levana Kirschenbaum

In Short Order by Levana KirschenbaumReview by Alisa Fleming, author of Go Dairy Free ~ For those of you, like me, who would love to see one of Levana Kirschenbaum’s demos, but have yet to make it to New York, you can now bring her into your own home!  In Short Order is a combination recipe guide and complete kitchen demonstration.  The succinct and handy little book of written recipes, tips, and nutritional information is accompanied by a packed-full CD of recipe demos that comes neatly tucked inside a pocket in the back cover.

I must admit that I am fairly new to demos, but this is truly a gem.  The ability to watch Levana at work put many of my kitchen jitters at ease. Levana makes elegant cooking look so incredibly easy with her casual nature and enthusiastic personality. The demos have an informal air about them, yet they are filled with Levana’s ingredient explanations, suggestions for alternatives, money- (and calorie-) saving tips, easy clean-up ideas, and plan-ahead time savers.  She quite literally brings you into your kitchen, practically insisting that you make these recipes because they are far too easy and delicious.

While the recipes in the accompanying book have specific amounts, the recorded demos truly show that Levana views cooking as more of an art than a science, and that having fun in the kitchen is an essential component to good food.

Levana’s menus aren’t always completely dairy-free, but they are always kosher and she accommodates dairy-free diets by offering alternatives when needed. The CD includes 30 chapters or demos, and all of the recipes and variations can be found in the book.  The recipes include Breakfast & Brunch Dishes (including crepes with various fillings!), Drinks, Soups, Make Ahead Sauces, Pasta Sauces, 1-2-3 Chicken Dishes (with fish variation), and Salads/Dressings.

In Short Order is available to purchase direct on the Levana Cooks website, along with her other two cookbooks, Levana Cooks Dairy Free and Levana’s Table, both of which I highly recommend.  On that website, Levana is also selling her new line of spelt desserts!
