Not a Drop of Milk or Soy

Not a Drop of Milk... (or Soy) by Kristin Caitlin Reilly (Book Review)

I love seeing new self-published books and was elated when Kristin Caitlin Reilly contacted me about her new cookbook, Not a Drop of Milk … (or Soy). This 120 page book is filled with over 90 recipes for classic and simple cuisine. Rather than trying to test the limits of your palate, Kristin’s recipes use everyday ingredients, time-tested flavor combinations, and many traditional concepts.

To give you an idea of what you will find in this cookbook, the following is a complete list of the recipe chapters followed by a couple sample recipe titles from each chapter:

Breakfast (samples: Classic Diner Pancakes, Blueberry Crumb Cake)

Breads (samples: Old-Fashioned Biscuits, Cinnamon Raisin Oat Bread)

Soups (samples: Potato Leek Soup, Tomato Basil Soup)

Entrees (samples: Chicken Pot Pie, Wood Roasted Duck with Scallion Pancakes)

Vegetables (samples: Sweet Parsnips, Oven Roasted Asparagus)

Cookies and Brownies (samples: Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, Almond Biscotti)

Cakes, Tarts & Pies (samples: Chocolate Satin Pie, Cream Puffs)

Puddings & Custards (samples: Chocolate Pudding, Crème Caramel)

Ice Creams, Sorbets, and Dessert Toppings (samples: Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate Raspberry Sorbet)

Unfortunately for me, many of the recipes in Not a Drop of Milk use eggs to add richness and body. Since my husband is allergic to eggs, that eliminates quite a few recipes for our house. Swapping the eggs would make these different recipes altogether, so I couldn’t really judge them properly. Nonetheless, there were still a few to choose from, and I have bookmarked the Christmas Risotto (really, this looks like an easy, any time of year recipe), Cinnamon Crunch Apple Pie (my husband loves apple pie and I like it with a crunchy topping), and Granola (I love making granola from scratch) to trial in the near future. Since these recipes aren’t overly complicated, I can tell by reading the ingredients and directions of each that the results should turn out nicely.

To note, though this is primarily a black and white cookbook, there are a handful of color pictures thrown in for visuals.
