Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin by Zoltan Rona, MD, MSc (Book Review)

Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin

As soon as this little book came onto my radar, I knew I had to check it out. The “sunshine” vitamin is a hot topic these days, as even “old-school” physicians are recognizing that the RDA set for Vitamin D (400 IU) may be far too low. But many of us are left wondering, how much we should take?

Fortunately, the author, Dr. Zoltan Rona, answered this question (in great detail) and many more. For supplements, is vitamin D2 (the vegan form) inferior to D3? Can we get sufficient vitamin D via diet? Which are the “good” rays, UVA or UVB? When is the best time to get sun?

That last question will likely throw most of us for a loop. According to the research, the sun’s rays are actually safest from 10am to 2pm when the “good” rays (UVB) are strongest. UVA rays are strongest and more hazardous outside of these hours. Completely contrary to what we have been taught, isn’t it?

I learned a great deal from this book. There were just a couple of things that deterred me from giving it a solid five stars. At times the author’s tone sounded a bit arrogant and actually bitter toward those who previously doubted his work. As I read on, I realized he was losing credibility in my subconscious by veering into this realm. Also, the information provided is good, but the second half of the book goes into various conditions quite a bit. Useful as a reference for conditions you may be interested in, but it felt a bit repetitive and didn’t keep my attention for reading the book through. I would have preferred a few more general questions answered within that space.

Overall, Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin is a fairly thorough, yet succinct book. It is a quick and easy read, yet I know I will keep it on hand indefinitely for reference. For the price, and for the sake of health, I recommend this one as a must buy.
