Ener-G Seattle Brown Loaf (Vegan, Kosher, Gluten-Free, Soy-Free) PDF Print E-mail

Ener-G has packed a lot of goodness into this little loaf.  It is surprisingly dense and very heavy, yet the shape makes slices that are sized perfectly for little hands or light snacks.  I liked the flavor, which was somewhat “wheat-y” from the corn and rice blend of flours and starch.  Although the Brown Loaf is a good contender for those who must follow a gluten free diet, the texture was definitely different from your average gluten containing yeast bread.  It was soft with a very fine granular texture that seems to be common with gluten-free breads.  Overall, it did not crumble, an incredible bonus, however it did tend to break apart easily.  For this reason, we don’t recommend it for chunky sandwiches, such as tuna fish or those made with add-ons like lettuce and tomato.  Luckily, it makes great PB & J’s.  It is also marvelous toasted for a light snack with some butter, jam, or a savory spread such as hummus.  My homemade wheat bread is still in first, but Ener-G has tackled the gluten-free challenge of making yeast breads, something I have yet to accomplish.

  • Pros:  Vegan; Kosher Pareve; A gluten free yeast bread, not a simple feat; Dense yet kid friendly; Low in sugar; Enriched with thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, iron, and folic acid
  • Cons:  Breaks apart easily; A different taste and texture from the traditional wheat bread some may be expecting

Recommended For:

  • Kids
  • PB & J’s
  • Toast

About Ener-G

Ener-G Foods is located in Seattle, Washington where they house a completely gluten-free, wheat-free, and dairy-free baking facility.  It is a true blessing for those with severe allergies and intolerances.  They also run three separate lines to isolate other common allergens.  The thoughtfulness of this company does not end with their product alone.  They have also employed a state of the art packaging technique, which allows their baked goods to have a 1-year shelf life without the need for refrigeration, freezing, or preservatives.  Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed.
