Katz Bakery Challah Rolls (Gluten-Free, Nut-Free) PDF Print E-mail

Katz Bakery sent me a little box full of goodies the other day and I was anxious to dig in and eat it all up. I especially wanted to try the breads. I'm all about the bread. If it don't taste good- I'm not havin' it! *insert a snap and a head bob here*

All kidding aside, I love bread and I rarely have it because I am way too lazy to make it from scratch. I just suck it up and eat roasted potatoes. Or I compensate by eating all the pretzels. I hardly ever get to have French Toast, regular toast. Oh how I miss eating TOAST with jelly! Or peanut butter!

So first up we have a large challah roll. Ah, yes, the proverbial challah roll. Large and in charge it slightly resembles a slightly browned UFO. I had this at Sunday dinner. At 3 in the afternoon. If you are Italian you know that Sunday lunch is called dinner. And it's always filled with bread slathered with butter and baked in the oven. I used to be able to clear a bread basket filled with that amazing buttery warm bread. Now if I tried that I think I would die. So I was more than happy to have my own bread at the table! I heated it up in the oven and sliced the baby open. Slapped on some Earth Balance and bit in.

First impression was- it actually tastes like bread with no funky aftertaste! My pet peeve is the first impression fades away and you are left with a bad aftertaste of funky flours and weird additives (date paste -I've seen it!!!!!) to make up for the fact there is no white flour in there. The roll was a little on the chewy side which I have noticed is a common thread among GF/DF breads. It is hard to get that chew out of there! Something has to hold it together, usually xantham gum and I think that adds the chewiness (correct me someone if I am wrong).

What I liked about this was definitely the taste. Normal bread here I come! I also liked the texture of the bread despite the chew (I pass no blame to them... even my bread is chewy). The crust was just crusty enough to make it seem like you were eating a nice big deli roll. I bet this would have been better with some shredded BBQ pork... The other good thing was the size- it is about the size of a small kaiser roll- perfect for sandwiches- of course I didn't think of that before I sliced it open. I would have saved it!

So 10 points for Katz so far!
