Erewhon Organic Kamut® Flakes (Vegan, Soy-Free) PDF Print E-mail

Crazy as it may sound, with all of my grain taste-testing, I had never tried kamut! Spelt and I have been friends for a while, but this alternate wheat grain had never made it into my kitchen until I discovered Erewhon’s Kamut Flakes.

Upon first bite, all I could think was, “These are really cool!” Each morsel was super crispy, but not sweet; more of a pure wheat-y taste. At first, I was surprised with how little the flakes were, but once I got a closer look, I noticed they looked like exploded spelt or wheat berries (I imagined kamut berries must be similar in size and shape).

Honestly, I loved the crispy-crunch and savory taste; definitely a nice change from over-sugared cereals and really versatile for using in recipes. They were really hearty, and though they contain a touch of pear juice concentrate, I think that sweetness was added merely to harmonize with any of the kamut’s natural bitterness.

I enjoyed my first bowl sans sugar altogether. But I did add a generous handful of fresh blueberries and a good dousing of unsweetened almond milk.

And, to my delight, the crunch held up in the almond milk nicely, as I leisurely set them up for a photo shoot.

Of course, this review would not be complete if I didn’t mention the stellar nutrition profile of this hearty breakfast cereal. Just 2/3 cup has only 1g of sugar and 110 calories, yet it packs in 4g of fiber and 5g of protein! My husband thought they were alright, but he likes a little sugar in the morning, so the strawberry crisp was his calling.

I think my only wish is that the package was packed a little fuller. It always seems like so much waste with air inside these big boxes, and I certainly wouldn’t complain if they upped it to a 1 lb box.

If you don’t gobble them up as is, these flakes should also hold up nicely in recipes … try a crispy coating on chicken, granola bars, or simply tossing a handful into your cooked oatmeal just before serving for a nice fiber-loaded crunch!

Erewhon Kamut Flakes Ingredients: Organic kamut, organic pear juice concentrate, sea salt.
