Kellogg's Organic Frosted Mini-Wheats (Vegan, Soy-Free) PDF Print E-mail

Please Note: Alas Kellogg's has discontinued their organic cereal line.

Frosted? Check.  Mini? Check.  Wheat-y? Check.  It looks like we have a winner!  It is likely that there will be mixed reactions about Kellogg's entering the Organic market.  However, from my view any company moving into organics is a step in the right direction, from both a sustainability and a dairy free perspective.  There are just a few main differences between the organic and the regular version:

  • The Organic version is made with organic whole wheat and organic evaporated cane juice syrup (rather than sugar and high fructose corn syrup)
  • The Organic version is free of BHT (preservative), Sorbitol, and Gelatin (thereby rendering it vegan)
  • The Organic box is smaller, 15.3oz as compared with the 19.0oz box of the regular stuff we spotted
  • The Organic version is a touch less sweet, but sugary nonetheless, and a touch less dense

As for taste, I enjoyed them and my husband actually preferred the organic mini-wheats to his former mini-wheats favorites, as they were just a bit less sweet.  Some more good news:  Kellogg's claims that "organic doesn't need to be expensive", so it is likely that sales on the natural variety will be quite common.  We picked up several boxes at our local grocer (Vons) for a special sale price of just $1.88, half the price fo the regular version (on sale) sitting next to it!

  • Pros: Organic (obviously); Vegan (unlike the regular version); No preservatives; Fortified (just like the regular version, keep in mind there is no calcium fortification, but it is high iin iron); Good flavor; Good price
  • Cons: Less dense than the regular verion; Amount you get in the box is a bit less overall

Recommended For:

  • Breakfast!
  • Snack Baggies

Where to Buy:

  • Online – Available on Amazon, though the price is higher than in store
  • In Store - Mainstream throughout the U.S.

These are great.
My mom picked up a box of these by accident while I was home for the summer, and I loved them! The frosting isn't caked on like the originals, and they taste much better in my opinion. Finally, a good whole wheat cereal I can enjoy for a long time. Let's hope more companies jump on the no-high-fructose-corn-syrup bandwagon.

i like frosted mini wheats, but they need more frosting in my opinion, seeing as its their only redeeming quality...
it all goes away once the milk touches it!! :cry
