Jake Bakes Vanilla Bean Marshmallows (Egg-Free, Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, Soy-Free*) PDF Print E-mail

Honestly, it has been at least a decade since I have had any marshmallows, which doesn’t exactly classify me as a marshmallow connoisseur.  Yet, as the unprofessional opinion of someone who really didn’t miss those packaged white puffs, these marshmallows are incredible! I would say that childhood memories came flooding back when I took my first bite, but they didn’t … because these were far better than any marshmallow memories of days past.  I am happy to forget the images of those stale, sugary, artificially injected sweets, which were really only well suited to a cup of cocoa or melted into crispy rice treats.  I now have new memories of large, soft white pillows that can genuinely be considered a stand alone treat.

Jake Bakes Food Allergy Friendly Marshmallows

On there own, these gems were pure marshmallow.  They tasted just as you should expect a marshmallow to taste, but cleaner than most and with a wonderful vanilla essence. They rivaled the size of the jumbo marshmallows you might see packaged at the store, but seemed even softer, and had a light dusting of powdered sugar for that final added touch.  Even so, they weren’t overly sweet, nor did they have even a hint of crystalline sugariness, they were completely smooth.

Jake Bakes Food Allergy Friendly MarshmallowsWhile I was sorely tempted to snack away on the entire bag, I was suddenly struck with a very strong craving for S’mores.  I divided a graham cracker in half, set one marshmallow atop one half, left the other half bare, and popped them both in the oven on broil.  After a few minutes the marshmallow was becoming noticeably melty and the grahams looked nicely toasted, so I promptly removed them, topped the marshmallow with chopped semi-sweet chocolate (Scharffenberger, yum!), placed the bare graham cracker on top to complete the sandwich, smooshed and … oh, my goodness, heaven.  Pure heaven.  I would have taken a photo, but at that point, I had already made a complete mess, chocolate on my chin, marshmallow goo on my fingers … ah yes, heaven.

Though most marshmallow brands are made without dairy, many are still a risk for other food allergies and for cross contamination, and let’s face it, they don’t taste half as good as these! Vegans should take note that these marshmallows do contain gelatin. However, Jake Bakes runs a dedicated gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, peanut-free, and tree nut-free facility that is also void of trans fats or any artificiality.  Did I mention these marshmallows are hand crafted?

Ingredients: Sugar, water, corn syrup, gelatin, organic vanilla beans, salt, cornstarch, powdered sugar, cream of tartar.
*The ingredients are soy-free, but a couple of the ingredients they use in other products (chocolate and vegan margarine) do have soy, and are run on shared lines.
