The Wally Bar from The Grocer’s Daughter (Vegan, Soy-Free) PDF Print E-mail

Wally BarGodiva meets “Granola” in this truly indulgent yet seemingly health-worthy bar.  From the top, alluring dark chocolate is meticulously scored, but on the flip side a surprise awaits.  Whole almonds, dried cherries, cashews, and other high quality trail mix items add a level of complexity to this bar that I never would have imagined.

For me, it was truly love at first bite, and second, and third…you see, each chocolate chunk had its own unique flavor.  First a chocolate covered cherry, then the crunch of a salty/sweet sesame stick, finally an entire almond sweetened with pure maple syrup and half-coated in rich dark chocolate.  Personally, I was delighted to discover the sesame sticks, which reminded me of my former favorite chocolate-covered pretzels, but in a grown-up presentation.

After nibbling on numerous Wally Bar squares, I began thinking... “This is just what good dark chocolate tastes like.  Any quality dark chocolate would have an equally decadent flair.  Wouldn’t it?  The trail mix add-ins must be the real fuel to my addiction.  After all, how different could chocolate be?"  Just at that moment, I spotted a 65% dark, organic, fair trade (the works) chocolate bar resting in our snack basket (don’t ask me how my husband missed that one).  Putting my theory to the test, I ripped the package open and popped a square in my mouth.  Child’s play!  This couldn’t possibly be dark chocolate?  I re-checked the label.  Incredible trail mix bonus aside, the other chocolate bar still paled in comparison to the Wally Bar.

Once I finally convinced myself that the antioxidants in the chocolate and the protein and fiber in the trail mix made this more of a nutritional snack than a dessert (it was a tough sell), I polished off the entire bar.  Two big thumbs up!

  • The Facts: The bar comes in a hefty 3.5oz size, and is very fulfilling at that.  I would rate it as gift-worthy and suitable for vegans.
  • The Ingredients:  Rainforest Alliance Chocolate, Almonds, Maple Syrup, Organic Roasted Cashews, Dried Cherries, Organic Dried Cranberries, Sesame Sticks (unbleached spelt flour, canola oil, sesame seeds, whole spelt flour, salt, beet powder, turmeric), Sunflower Seeds (sunflower kernels, sunflower oil, and/or cottonseed oil).
  • The Price: $6 – Even with my frugality, I vote well worth it for the Wally Bar
  • Where to Buy: Michigan residents may be able to track down a Wally Bar at these select retail locations.  But...for those of us who do not frequent the mid-west, Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates can be ordered via phone - (231) 326-3030.  They have successfully shipped to customers throughout the U.S., in Canada, and to Northern Europe.  Online ordering should be available in the near future for this item.

During a recent trip to visit family in Michigan, I ran across Grocer's Daughter Chocolate shop and got to try the Wally Bar - presented to me by Wally, himself! I guess you could call him the "Grocer's Daughter's Partner", in chocolate though not in life, he's about 30 years younger than Mimi, the Grocer's Daughter herself - who was also there. The Wally Bar was absolute heaven, and they had a few other vegan items - call and they'll talk you through their offerings, which seem to rotate and evolove frequently. I would recommend these chocolates to anyone - I'm hooked!
