Quest for Oreos: Mi-Del’s Chocolate Sandwich Cookies (Gluten-Free) PDF Print E-mail

By Amy Coccia - Mi-Del Gluten-Free Double Chocolate CookiesIf there is one thing we all love the most in life especially as children it’s Oreos and a cold glass of milk. We split apart the cookie, lick off the creamy frosty vanilla filling. Dunk the chocolate cookie part in the milk till it’s soft and squishy (hoping that chunks fall off into the milk so we can drink it) and sigh in the contentment of a happy and fulfilled childhood. It’s too bad Oreos have been the target of countless studies, the blame for childhood obesity, they’ve tried banning them in California, taking out the trans fat, double stuffing them, reducing the fat content. Every which way you go they are bad for you. And still they PREVAIL. YUM. I mean come on, there are almost as many studies on Oreos as there are on Twinkies! At least Oreos are biodegradable!

So when you have food allergies, it seems that food is unattainable, uneatable. You ask yourself- can I eat this and not get sick? So you search the food aisles for convenience food close to what once was that will not tear your sensitive tummy to bits. Since I have a love for all things chocolate and Oreo when I found Mi-Del all natural, dairy and gluten free “Chocolate Sandwich Cookies” I thought I hit a jackpot. Into the carriage they go. I could enjoy them and my daughter could at the same time. She has celiac, I have celiac and a dairy allergy. We both love Oreos. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Today I took them out, eager to try them, who cares if it was eight o’clock in the morning? I cracked open the package and grabbed one, handing another to sweet Olivia who was thrilled her mommy was letting her eat junk for breakfast. They are a bit on the small side and the filling looked a little…opaque and not creamy gooey at all. Not deterred we both bit into one. I almost lost my tooth and Liv couldn’t even get a chunk off. Crunchy is putting it mildly. She broke the cookie in half and tried to lick the frosting off while I was stuck trying to figure out what they actually tasted like because it was not Oreos. “Mom, the frosting fell on the floor.” I looked down and saw her opaque frosting, still in a perfect circle, on the floor. Sigh. I threw the cookie down on the plate in disgust. She handed the other half of the cookie back to me. I picked up the plate and started to head into the kitchen to throw them out when one fell on the floor. It hit the floor and did not break at all. No crumbs came off. Wow. A hockey puck for certain.

I do like Newman’s Own Chocolate Sandwich cookies, however they are not guaranteed to be gluten-free, only dairy and wheat free. Needless to say when I crave an Oreo I will be caving and buying those instead. I think we can handle the slight bellyache instead of breaking all our teeth off.

Sorry Mi-Del, this is one disappointed Oreo Lover.
