"It tastes just like chicken pot pie," exclaimed my husband as he sampled his first chicken nugget from Applegate Farms. We were both impressed. Seriously impressed. The new chicken nuggets from Applegate Farms are certainly tops in quality, especially as far as chicken nuggets go. The company boasts its dedication to antibiotic-free, farm to table, poultry that is free from sodium nitrates/nitrates and fillers. But these nuggets go one step further, taking a traditionally breaded product and making it both gluten-free and dairy-free while still maintaining an all natural profile. And you know how the story goes, good quality ingredients equals a good tasting product ...
While far from gourmet fare, these two-bite nuggets were delicious. The light, crunchy and flavorful coating made them tasty enough to eat on their own, but dipping them in barbecue sauce (Organicville brand to keep with the all natural theme) made us feel like kids again ... only this time, the chicken pieces were real chicken, rather than formed and pressed mystery meat. As for the ingredients, they are pretty straight forward: Chicken, Water, Corn Starch, Salt, Extract Of Oregano, Battered And Breaded With, Water, Rice Flour, Tapioca Dextrin, Corn Starch, Salt, Spices, Spice Extractives, Extract Of Paprika, Extractive Of Turmeric, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Ground Celery, Breading Set In Vegetable Oil. Do you pay a premium for the all-natural, no antibiotics, no preservatives, no nitrates, no dairy, and no gluten label? Well, that depends on how you look at it. If you compare the price to making your own chicken nuggets from scratch at home, then you are certainly looking at a convenience mark-up. But, if you compare the price to Chicken McNuggets, then your dollar outlay per nugget is practically identical, with a serious quality upgrade. Plus, all you need is twelve minutes in the oven; no drive to the golden arches required. You decide. This is a third party review by Alisa Fleming, author of Go Dairy Free: The Guide & Cookbook.
