With radio ads boasting their new Masala burgers, and a few rave reviews I had seen on the internet, I couldn’t resist throwing these new veggie burgers into the cart on my last trip to Trader Joe’s. Since my husband caught the veggie burger salad bug from Amy’s vegan veggie burgers, I am curious to trial other brands to see how they stack up. This one was definitely a potato-based burger, for a unique experience. Unlike the photo on the package, ours contained noticeable chunks of white potato just upon first site. Since they are full-cooked, I could have simply defrosted them for our salads, but we were a bit hungry. So I heated them up in a skillet, with some coconut oil, for roughly five minutes. I liked the warm spice and flavorful base that did seem to scream masala. Loaded with potatoes and a scattering of other veggies, these were like a potato pancake / veggie burger hybrid. While good atop our salads, I am not certain how the softer texture would really hold up within a bun… though I have heard good things. Since the burgers themselves house so much flavor, I would only use a schmear of mayonnaise or vegannaise when enjoying these burger-style. So will I be repurchasing? It's possible, but doubtful. My husband reiterated his loyalties to the Amy’s line, as the potato base and Masala flavor just didn’t do it for him. I think Trader Joe’s hit the flavor spot on, and would like to see them turn this one gluten-free, as it seems to be an easy transition. Nonetheless, I do tend to agree with my husband that Amy’s had more of that “burger” quality. My Extra Notes & Tips - For those who have a severe allergy, it is noted on the package that these burgers are made on shared equipment with peanuts, milk, tree nuts, and soy.
