El Burrito Soy Breakfast Sausage (Vegan) PDF Print E-mail

El Burrito has created a healthy take on traditional morning fare that is sure to please most discerning vegetarians, vegans, and dairy free carnivores seeking a meat break.  The texture of their Breakfast Sausage is quite good, and very similar to traditional sausage.  We found it just a touch crumbly, as it is not indulgently greasy like pork sausage.  However, this is more than a fair trade-off for the ultra-low 3.5 grams of fat per serving, including zero saturated fat and cholesterol.  I can safely say that the fat and cholesterol levels of most breakfast sausages are off the charts when compared to these heart-healthy numbers.  We also enjoyed the flavor, which was bold with spices.  The use of sage and fennel rather than stick-to-your-breath garlic and onions, makes this a more valuable morning selection as well.  As a meat-cooking challenged individual, I can say that preparation was a snap.  Slice, drop in the skillet for a few minutes, flip, let cook a few more minutes, and serve.  Be aware that each slice has over 350mg of sodium, which could be a major concern for some.  However, that same serving will net you only 60 calories, 0g of sugar, and the low fat and cholesterol noted previously.  As an added benefit, each serving contains a touch of calcium (60mg) and fiber (2g).

  • Pros:  Vegan, Low in fat; No cholesterol, No preservatives; Readily available in major (traditional) grocery stores; Bold flavor; Pleasant meat-like texture
  • Cons:  High in sodium; A few less recognizable ingredients; Slightly crumbly

Recommended For:

  • Vegetarians AND Vegans
  • Breakfast Protein
  • Carnivores in Need of a Meat Break
  • Crumbled as a Sausage Mix-in for Stuffed Mushrooms, Bell Peppers, or Eggs (Vegan Alternative or Organic)

Where to Buy:

  • In Stores - In Natural Food Grocers throughout the U.S., see El Burrito for a store locator

I am attempting a full vegan diet, and decided to try out this sausage. It really is good! I was surprised. It filled me up and had that perfect breakfast sausage flavor (I had it at lunch) without being greasy. I would recommend it.
