Foods Alive Organic Sweet ‘n Sassy Hemp and Flax Oil Dressings (Vegan, Gluten-Free, Soy-Free) PDF Print E-mail

The Omega-3’s found in hemp and flax oils are quite delicate, easily destroyed by high heat. Though that means they are not the best choice for cooking, they are perfect drizzling on the finished product. Hence why Foods Alive took their Gold Flax Oil and Hemp Oil and used them as bases for their Sweet ‘n Sassy Salad Dressings.

These dressings are classified as raw, and contain only the following ingredients: Raw Cold Pressed Oil, Raw Agave Nectar, Raw Apple Cider Vinegar, Celery Seed, and Celtic Sea Salt. And though they are identical in ingredients, aside from one using flax oil while the other uses hemp oil, I was surprised by the taste and texture difference.

I am not certain if it was a batch issue, since we did vigorously shake both to ensure a fluid product, but the flax-based dressing was a bit sweeter and thicker (though both varieties contain 3g of sugar per tablespoon), while the hemp-based dressing had a nice little “seedy” touch, as you can see from the photo…

Foods Alive Organic Meg's Sweet & Sassy Salad Dressings - Flax and Hemp Based

Both were delicious, and less “sassy” than I expected. We did find Meg’s Sweet & Sassy Flax Oil dressing to be just a bit too sweet, but neither of our tasters are big fans of agave-sweetened items. Luckily, the sweet taste mellows atop a big salad for some nice contrasting flavor and the slightly thick consistency offers a wonderful richness.

Meg’s Sweet & Sassy Hemp Oil Dressing had just the right amount of sweetness, was a little more oil-rich, and it was just thick enough to cling to our veggies. I think that would be our top choice I the future.

Overall, I would describe these dressings as mild, but flavorful, with a very nice, pourable consistency that leans toward a dressing rather than a vinaigrette.
