A tragedy happened to my Organicville BBQ Sauces. As you may know from my other reviews of their ketchup and salad dressings, I am a huge fan of Organicville. They really know how to create a quality product. Needless to say, I was elated to get my hands on their new BBQ Sauces. I cracked open each bottle and snuck a taste of each immediately after they fell into my possession. That would have been my first and final mistake with these new products. Now that they were opened, I had to put them in the fridge. I neatly tucked them into the refrigerator door, and went to plot how I was going to use them for dinner that night.
And then it happened. Midway through the day, there was an enormous CRASH! My husband opened the refrigerator door and the entire shelf fell. Glass everywhere, and yes, yes, my brand new BBQ sauces were gone. I put off writing this review until I could locate some new bottles, but I can wait no longer since a Whole Foods just popped into my neighborhood and I didn’t readily spot stock. The salad dressings, check, new agave ketchup, check, BBQ sauces … I must be blind. Anyway, I will keep looking, but I don’t want to keep the review waiting any longer! Original ~ As mentioned, I managed to get a quick taste, and upon witnessing the remains of the crash, I quickly wrote down what I could remember in terms of nuances. I can easily tell you, it was good, darn good. But as for details – it had a wonderfully sweet flavor with just a hint of spice. It wasn’t a deep BBQ sauce, but it wasn’t overly “ketchup” either. Rather than “Original” I would probably label this variety as “Sweet & Spicy.” Hot & Spicy ~ My taste of this one was alas quite brief and fleeting, but it definitely had a deeper, richer taste (if you will) with a bit more depth in flavor and a bigger kick. I liked that it was even lower in sugars, and that it wasn’t over the top spicy (at least it didn’t kick me too hard with the small taste I managed to get). We like spicy in our household, sometimes, but more on the medium scale rather than fire-breathing. Both varieties are primarily sweetened with agave nectar, followed by a bit of molasses for that deeper barbecue sauce taste. The hot & spicy also has some evaporated cane juice, but judging by the relatively low 6g of sugar per tablespoon, I think it is a pretty small amount. Like all of the Organicville products, I don’t think you can go wrong with these BBQ sauces! This is a third party review by Alisa Fleming, author of Go Dairy Free: The Guide & Cookbook.
