Alisa Fleming ~ I had the opportunity to meet the legendary Mary at a conference last year. With her success in business, I was expecting a quick and formal introduction with a conservative business person, but the woman that I met was at ease and friendly, with a beautiful smile from ear to ear. Nonetheless, she was busy, so there wasn’t a lot of chatting. Fortunately, her assistant at the event filled me in on the various Mary’s Gone Crackers Organic products, and quickly told me her favorites were the Sticks & Twigs.
Mary’s Gone Crackers Organic Sticks & Twigs are what I would call a throwback to the early days of vegan and “granola” food. While the health food industry is spending billions to create “healthy” imitations of guilty foods, Mary is embracing the flavors and textures of whole grains and seeds. The Sticks & Twigs are very hearty and very crunchy, yet full of flavor from the various gluten-free grains and seeds (brown rice, quinoa, millet, amaranth, flax, etc.) and savory herbs and spices. They come in three flavors:
Sea Salt – A pleasant savory taste, seasoned only with sea salt and gluten-free tamari (soy sauce). Curry – The fragrant curry flavor and scent is ever-present and a unique pairing with the whole grains. At first this intriguing combo tasted slightly odd to me, but the warm spice gradually became an addiction. Chipotle Tomato – In a way, this variety was similar to the curry, a warm and flavorful spice that faded into a mild and addictive heat. It did, however, have what I would call a deeper flavor with more contrasting notes … good, but I liked the Curry better. Though I agreed that the Sticks & Twigs were really good, I couldn’t pass up trialing the signature line of Mary’s Gone Crackers (which are also organic, vegan, and gluten-free). The crackers come in five simple flavors: Original Seed, Black Pepper, Herb, Caraway, and Onion. The varieties are quite similar, differing only in the title ingredient, so I won’t bore you with tasting notes. I enjoyed them all, except for the Caraway, but I’m simply not a caraway fan. If you have rye-loving taste buds, then that one is for you. I absolutely loved the shape and durability of the Crackers. They have similar ingredients, and thus a similar overall flavor, to the Sticks & Twigs, but are round flat crisps. So, so perfect for dips! They even have a little tiny rim to help keep some extra dip goodness on the crackers. Like the Twigs, the Crackers have a super crunch, and a seedy whole grain flavor that is neutral enough to pair with a wide selection of savory dips, including hummus, salsa, guacamole, bean dip, or a creamy dairy-free blend. Dietary Notes: By ingredients, these snacks are Vegan, Vegetarian, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, Peanut-Free, Wheat-Free, and Low Sugar. See the packaging for allergen and manufacturing "may contain" labeling, and contact the manufacturer when severe food allergies are of concern.
