Wayfare Pudding: Dairy-Free, Whole Grain, and Did Someone Say Butterscotch? PDF Print E-mail

Wayfare Dairy-Free Pudding - Vegan, Whole Grain, Gluten-Free, Soy-FreeAlisa Fleming ~ Wayfare Foods has expanded their product line beyond spreadable vegan cheeses to include something sweet, pudding! Wayfare Pudding comes in three popular flavors, and has a surprising base of millet, lima beans, rice, oat bran, and oats. Don’t let the lima beans deter you; this pudding really is a dessert-like treat.

I was immediately impressed with the amount that you get in each package of Wayfare Pudding, the convenient, recyclable tubs contain four generous servings that are relatively low in calories and fat. Also, unlike the competitor puddings, Wayfare is dairy-free, egg-free, soy-free, gluten-free (certified), and vegan. Top that!

I sampled all three flavors, and here were my personal tasting notes …

Butterscotch: Wow, was this variety thick! I was concerned that it might be a bit too gelatin-like based on the way it had set up, but fortunately, this wasn’t an issue. I dumped the lot in my blender, gave it a whirl for just 30 seconds, returned it to the package, and voila … creamy pudding! The texture was in-fact, rich and pudding-like with a slight applesauce consistency. It wasn’t off-putting in the slightest, just not as perfectly smooth as traditional pudding.

I loved the flavor, which was what I would describe as “in your face” butterscotch. I love all things butterscotch and appreciated that they didn’t take a wimpy approach to the formula. On a few occasions, I enjoyed a small bowl of this pudding with mini chocolate chips or chocolate shavings for a little contrast.

Vanilla: Interestingly enough, and in stark contrast to the butterscotch, the vanilla pudding was a bit thin and a touch runny. I assumed it was a batch issue (since the chocolate was thick like the butterscotch), and the thinner texture didn't detract at all from the flavor, which was deep and very, very vanilla.

I devoured this tub parfait-style with some seasonal pomegranate, but would love to try making pudding pops with it sometime!

Chocolate: As mentioned, this flavor was thick, like the butterscotch, and like the others, Wayfare didn’t skimp on taste. It was a bit too bittersweet on the tongue for my personal preferences, but I put the chocolate pudding in the blender with a frozen banana and a touch of stevia for a delicious chocolate pudding smoothie!

Dietary Notes: By ingredients, the puddings are Vegan, Vegetarian, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Certified Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, Peanut-Free, Soy-Free, and Wheat-Free. See the packaging for allergen and manufacturing "may contain" labeling, and contact the manufacturer when severe food allergies are of concern.
