Thanks to Go Dairy Free reader Barbara for emailing this recommendation and the menu images for Old Carolina Barbecue Company…
I found a new restaurant that quickly became one of my favorites! You are my goto source when it comes to eating dairy free and so I want to share my find with you and your other followers. There is a restaurant called “Old Carolina Barbecue Company” that is a small chain in Ohio [they also have a new location in Ann Arbor, MI]. It is like a combination of fast food and sit down. You order at the counter, but they bring it to your table and they bus the tables. The food comes quickly, but the meats are slow cooked for 14 hours.
They do not have allergy information online, but they have an allergy menu at the restaurant. I ate at the location in Strongsville and they allowed me to take pictures of their allergy menu [see below]. I cannot guarantee the information will be accurate for every location, as they get their bread fresh from a local bakery. However, the main items should have the same recipes.
My favorite thing about this restaurant is that they have dairy-free hush puppies and dairy-free donut holes. They have a dessert called “Boardwalk Bites” that are donut holes. You can get them tossed in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. They are fried fresh when you order them. They are so good that I don’t understand why no one else makes dairy-free donuts. It is well worth going to the restaurant just for the donut holes.
[On the allergen menu] they have each menu item listed with a column for each major allergen. Then, there is a check mark if an item contains the allergen. It is very simple to understand. Most items are dairy-free, including all of their barbecue sauce options. Most of the meat is plain when you order it and you can put your own sauce on it. Old Carolina Barbecue Company is highly recommended!
See their website below for locations (throughout northeastern Ohio plus 1 location in Ann Arbor Michigan), phone numbers, and their general menu.
