Our tasting group did not contain any fans of white and fluffy, so we enjoyed the dense, doughy, and grain-like texture of Ener-G’s cinnamon rolls. Created for the gluten-free / wheat-free consumer, these cinnamon rolls contain an interesting mix of corn, potato, and rice flours that actually comes across as very “wheaty” in both texture and flavor. As to be expected from the density, they are quite filling, yet the calorie and fat load per serving is very modest (220 and 5 grams respectively). The roll itself is just slightly sweet with a very rich cinnamon flavor. For added sweetness, it is speckled with raisins, and topped with a light amount of two sugary spreads. Although it is technically sweet enough, we felt it needed more. We combined some brown sugar (a loosely packed teaspoon per serving), a very small amount of butter (less than ½ teaspoon per serving) and a couple of drops of real vanilla extract. After pouring on our homemade icing, we followed the directions to heat it in the microwave with a few added drops of water. Did I mention how easy these are to prepare? Each taster felt that the end result was greatly improved, and gave us that more indulgent “I just treated myself to a cinnamon roll” feeling, with some added icing. We plan to lobby Ener-G for a bigger sugar hit. I must admit traditional cinnamon roll purists should look elsewhere. However, gluten-free consumers and grain rotators (such as myself) will likely appreciate the efforts Ener-G has put forth to create a unique, yet tasty, gluten-free cinnamon roll.

Ener-G Foods is located in Seattle, Washington where they house a completely gluten-free, wheat-free, and dairy-free baking facility. It is a true blessing for those with severe allergies and intolerances. They also run three separate lines to isolate other common allergens. The thoughtfulness of this company does not end with their product alone. They have also employed a state of the art packaging technique, which allows their baked goods to have a 1-year shelf life without the need for refrigeration, freezing, or preservatives. Needless to say, I was thoroughly impressed.
