Produced in Spain, where olive oil is praised above dairy butter, this pure, whipped olive oil actually stays solid, yet soft at room temperature. We liked the Black Truffle as the rich base to a spread and the Herbed for finishing cooked meats and vegetables. The luxury price keeps us from baking with it (too much quantity needed), but anyone (dairy-free or not) would be delighted to see an assortment of these jars in a gift basket.

Imagine a soft, dairy-free spread made purely with olive oil. That’s exactly what you get with El Marques Olive Oil Butter – whipped using their patent pending process and still spreadable at room temperature!

There are a few brands of butter-flavored olive oils on the market, but El Marques is the first we’ve seen to take the opposite approach – it tastes like olive oil but is “creamed” to be the consistency of a whipped butter. I didn’t get the chance to sample the Original olive oil butter, which has just one ingredient: olive oil. Instead, we jumped ahead to two of the flavored varieties.

Herbed Olive Oil Butter

This blend includes just pure olive oil (not extra-virgin as indicated on some websites), rosemary, thyme and sage. The herbs are notably fresh and rustic – a little too harsh in fact for using as a raw spread on toast or in cooked grains for us. However, the soft but solid consistency allows the herbs to be suspended and easily used to spread atop meats or vegetables when cooking.

Black Truffle Flavor Olive Oil Butter

With just a hint of black truffle flavor seamlessly combined with the olive oil base, this El Marques olive oil butter has a few more applications. It lends a rich, musky flavor to toast or grains, heightened with some salt and/or light seasonings, and can be used like the Herbed, as a finisher on meats or vegetables on the grill.

El Marques also recommends using their olive oil butter in baking. While I could easily see this as an enjoyable application, the price point puts it beyond accessible for my budget in the quantities needed for making cookies, scones, or biscuits. For now, olive oil butter is a “giftable” recommendation from me, to be savored and used as a rich final touch.

Certifications: We did not notice any certifications on El Marques Olive Oil Butter.
