Summary:

These are perfect for a nutritious but satisfying afternoon snack. The Madagascar bourbon vanilla and sea salt gave the Blonde variety a rich flavor, the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough delivered as a tender treat, while the freeze-dried strawberries escalated the Strawberry macaroons to a top pick. We enjoyed them chilled and at room temperature for a special dessert-like snack.

It’s naptime. That wonderful time of the afternoon when I have a minute to sit down, check my email, sip some tea, grab a family-size candy bar – no! But I could really go for a snack. Something sweet, but not too sweet, that won’t make me crash in half an hour. What to eat, what to eat?

Recently this question was answered for me by Hail Merry Macaroons. Macaroons are the answer! Healthy macaroons made from raw ingredients, that is.

Hail Merry Macaroons

I had the chance to try their Blonde, Sea Salt Caramel and Strawberry macaroons, and I’m happy to report that they are all lovely.

The Blonde Hail Merry macaroons are made with organic shredded coconut, organic maple syrup, natural raw almond flour, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic Madagascar bourbon vanilla, and sea salt. The sea salt and vanilla add a depth of flavor that I was happily surprised to find in a raw food treat.

The Caramel Sea Salt and Strawberry Almond Hail Merry macaroons were equally amazing, though I was especially surprised by the fresh flavor of the freeze-dried strawberries. This special burst put the Strawberry Almond Hail Merry macaroons at the head of the pack as my favorite of the three flavors.

I tried each of the macaroon flavors straight out of the fridge and at room temperature. The Hail Merry website recommends eating them at room temperature for a soft, melt-in-your mouth texture. Ah, the magic of coconut oil! However, I also enjoyed them chilled and chewy for a refreshing afternoon pick-me-up.

The bite-size portioning of Hail Merry macaroons makes it easy to eat as many or as few as you’d like in a sitting. It also makes them ideal for lunch boxes or sharing with the child who wakes up early from his nap.

Hail Merry Macaroons: New Flavor Update

Alisa here. Since Sarah’s original review, Hail Merry has added two new flavors that I had the opportunity to sample: Lemon and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.

The Lemon are simply spot on – perfectly sweet, just tart enough, intense in natural flavor, and they meld seamlessly with the underlying coconut vibe. While I liked them for snacking, I found that they were simply perfect for crumbling in dairy-free parfaits or making into snack recipes (see below).

Just as you might imagine, the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Hail Merry macaroons are heavenly. They hit that sweet spot without being overly sugary, while offering the comforting, earthy warmth of cookie dough. They are deliciously tender, and are even soft to the bite straight from the freezer. Yes indeed, they do work in cookie dough ice cream (recipe below). Like Sarah, the Strawberry and Blonde Hail Merry macaroons were my favorite, but the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough may have squeezed in for the win.

Fun and Tasty Recipes with Hail Merry Macaroons

Because Hail Merry Macaroons are so tender, yet pretty darn cohesive, I’ve adored using them in recipes. All of the following were created by me (Alisa Fleming)

I discovered Hail Merry products at the Gluten-Free Allergen-Free Expo in San Francisco last month. I would have to agree – the Blonde Macaroons are fantastic – as are the Chocolate!

I was shocked to find this product in several flavors at my local TJMaxx!! Needless to say with all the hype about them I snagged each of the 3 bags they had.
I tried the chocolate, lemon, and blonde. All were great!!
*They are extremely dense in coconut, so they are not for someone who wants a hint of coconut.

They are the perfect little snack!
