Summary:

Made in a top 8-free facility, vegan, and fair trade, its easy to justify one of these sweet treats on occasion. We adored the designs, quality and the flavors, but would love it if the cookies were a touch less dry.

There are no worries about “missing out” for many food allergic kids, thanks to bakeries like Inglorious Monk. They specialize in whoopie pies, from bite-sized delights to entire sandwich cakes!

Each whoopie pie, big or small, is made in the Inglorious Monk facility, without any of the top 8 allergens. They are also vegan and fair trade! We had the opportunity to sample two of the regular-sized flavors and a package of the minis:

Chocolate & Chocolate Chip Whoopie Bites – The flavor on each little gem was delightful. Kylie and Tony loved the chocolate, but agreed with me that the chocolate chip variety (my favorite) tasted spot on. We all wished that the slightly dry cookies were a touch moister, but that didn’t keep us from gobbling up the bag in 5 minutes. Note that they also offer new multi-flavor packs of the bites.

Lemon Whoopie Pies – I was enamored by the snail-like design of the regular-sized whoopie pies. The way that the Inglorious Monk bakers pipe the cookies just so, makes them enticing to look at and fun to eat (I liked working my way around with the swirl!). As a lemon fan, I delighted in the sweet, lemony, pleasant over all flavor of this one. It was a double dose of lemon (icing and cookies), which was a bit too much citrus for the younger taste buds in our house. My only complaint was that the cookies were a touch dry and crumbly.

Pumpkin Whoopie Pies – Oh my heavens! The fragrance that smacked me in the nose when I opened the package was amazing. This is definitely a dessert, with its very sweet but delicious vanilla icing and pumpkin-rich sandwich cookies. The cookie texture was a touch chewy and dry, but good overall.

Raspberry-Filled Whoopie Pies – Naturally colored with beet juice, the raspberry filling had an amazing, super-sweet flavor. We trialed it with both Vanilla and Chocolate cake cookies (egg shaped for spring and Easter!). The Chocolate was quite rich and almost brownie-like, yet a bit like birthday cake with the raspberry filling. We enjoyed it, but the Vanilla cookies (with chocolate drizzle) were the most popular in our house when paired with the raspberry icing; something about that combination just married perfectly.
