Not all dairy-free milk alternatives are created alike. Depending on who makes them, they may be creamy like whole milk or lean like skim. They might be quite sweet or almost a touch bitter, and possess the different nuances of the ingredient base. They can also vary dramatically in nutrition: fortified or not, protein-rich or nearly void of calories, and simple or pumped up with healthy ingredients. Omega Milk falls into the skim milk category, with nary a hint of sweetness. It is relatively low calorie, but does have a touch of protein, healthy fats, and even some nutritious add-ins.
Truth be told, I nearly overlooked this new entrant to the dairy alternative market. At Expo West I completely passed up their booth, as the company name “Omega Creamery” led me to believe it was a dairy company, as did the look of their half gallon jugs. Fortunately, a press release after the show helped me find my way to Omega Milk and their unique Omega Cream Ice Cream.
Omega Milk is a flax and rice-based milk alternative that comes in three varieties: Original, Vanilla, and Unsweetened. Interestingly enough, all three varieties are very low in sugar, and pretty much tasted unsweetened to all of us and even had a slightly bitter aftertaste. The Vanilla was intense in flavor, while the Original was wonderful on granola and cereal – it was light, but had the perfect flavor for a gently-sweetened breakfast compliment. I typically love using Unsweetened milk alternatives for recipes, but Omega Milk has a blessing in disguise that makes me hesitate on cooking or baking with it – all three varieties contain probiotics!
As mentioned, the consistency of Omega Milk is more like skim milk and a touch watery, as you may be able to see in the image above. I was a bit torn on my vote, to be honest. This isn’t my favorite milk alternative in flavor (good in smoothies and with cereal, but not the tops for sipping), and I usually like them just a touch creamier. That said, the care in ingredients and nutritionals places Omega Milk in the top half of the pack.
Each variety is certified organic, contains that wonderful probiotic bacteria (can always use more of that!), has over 2500mg of Omega 3’s per serving, is low sugar, and actually has 2 grams of protein per serving (so many milk alternatives are void of protein). One thing that the strictly soy-free may not be happy with, is that they do use a smidgen of non-GMO soy lecithin in these beverages.
Dietary Notes: By ingredients, Omega Milk is vegan, vegetarian, dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, and tree nut-free. Nonetheless, check with the company on their manufacturing processes for all varieties if potential allergen cross-contamination is an issue for you.
