At first glance, the One Lucky Duck Crispies didn’t seem to be anything special. From my initial perspective, they looked like two bags full of broken up crackers. I really wasn’t expecting much. Boy did I underestimate this snack…
The Cocoa Crispies themselves were little bite-sized pieces, of what appeared to be a once in tact sheet of thin crackers. As I opened the package, a wonderful chocolate scent floated gently past my nose. My lackadaisical attitude quickly transformed into intrigue. As I bit down on my first small handful, I was greeted with a wonderful crunch. Actual grains of buckwheat crushed easily between my teeth for added texture to an already crispy bite.
As for the taste, I immediately noted a light cocoa flavor that was rather pleasant. However, the chocolate essence deepened as the cocoa and buckwheat blend came together. This unique flavor was delicious, and it made for an aftertaste that was free of sugary sweetness.
To be honest, the folks at One Lucky Duck had me with the crispy buckwheat; the good flavor was just an added bonus. I could devour these mini dessert crackers by the fistful. They are a perfect any time of day snack.
Ingredients: organic buckwheat, organic maple syrup, organic cocoa powder, organic cinnamon, vanilla extract, Himalayan crystal salt.
All of those nice things I just said about the Cocoa Crispies…multiply them by ten! Yes, it is true I love cinnamon. But personal preferences aside, this maple, cinnamon, and buckwheat combination is simply irresistible.
The Cinnamon Crispies are a touch lighter in texture than their Cocoa siblings. They still have the same great buckwheat crunch, but the backdrop is more of a cross between a cracker and a light wafer.
As you can already tell, I loved the sweet cinnamon goodness of these Crispies. Though they qualify as an afternoon treat or a dessert-like cracker in my books, they are just lightly sweetened. The Cinnamon Crispies do not offer the sugar overload that is common to “Americanized” snacks. Rather, they meld simple ingredients of the highest quality for a taste that, in my opinion, is near perfection.
Did I mention they are insanely addictive? Due to their seemingly light and “munchable” size, it was all too easy to inhale five or six of these Crispies at a time. Luckily, the buckwheat is quite nutritious and rather filling. My full stomach was the only thing that kept me from demolishing the entire bag in one sitting!
Ingredients: organic buckwheat, organic maple syrup, organic cinnamon, vanilla extract, Himalayan crystal salt.
Though I really do love both Crispy flavors as a snack, they do make an excellent hearty cereal. They hold up in milk (alternative) nicely, maintaining their crunchiness for a good 5 to 10 minutes at least (they didn’t last longer than this in my bowl). I did find them to be quite filling at first. I was only able to finish a small bowl before feeling satiated. However, within an hour, I toyed with the idea of going back for seconds.
My Extra Notes and Tips:
- As exhibited by their Crispies, One Lucky Duck is a well-kept gluten-free secret. Since it targets the raw and vegan audience, many other special diets are overlooked. Their products are also free of eggs, dairy, wheat, gluten, and soy. Not to mention, they use organic ingredients wherever possible.
- Though I haven’t trialed it, I would imagine these as an excellent topping to dairy-free/vegan ice cream or a fruit dessert.
- Buckwheat is a cool food. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a cereal grain, but rather a fruit seed related to rhubarb. It is rich in magnesium and fiber. You can read more about its healthy promoting benefits (including cardiovascular, blood sugar control, and cancer prevention) on the World’s Healthiest Foods website.
Where to Purchase: Order all natural, organic, and “raw” snacks direct from One Lucky Duck online. They also sell the wonderful ingredients they utilize in their finished products. Though located in the U.S., One Lucky Duck does ship internationally.
