… they even sprout them!
Way Better Snacks starts with a familiar base of stone-ground non-GMO corn and safflower oil, but they transform them to nutritious sprouted tortilla chips with ingredients like sprouted black beans, sprouted broccoli seeds, sprouted kale, sprouted organic brown rice flour, organic sprouted quinoa, and organic sprouted flaxseeds.
To avoid sending the wrong message with all of this over-the-top healthy ingredient talk, let me stop right now and tell you that yes, these sprouted tortilla chips DO taste fantastic, too. Each chip packs an amazing hearty crunch. The flavors are earthy, but not overpowering – there is enough flavor in each chip to enjoy a la carte, but they also go well with the usual dairy-free dips, including salsa, guacamole, and hummus.
Thus far, we’ve sampled 8 of their sprouted tortilla chips flavors: Multi-Grain, Sweet Potato, Sweet Chili, Unbeatable Blues, Black Bean, Naked Blues, Sriracha, and Mustard + Onion …
There isn’t too much to say, except that we liked and devoured all of them! The Sweet Chili sprouted tortilla chips pack a wollop of delicious, addictive flavor. Sweet, spicy and substantial, we both found them delicious and rather filling. I love any chip that is labeled as Sweet Potato, and these sprouted tortilla chips were no exception. For everyday noshing, my favorite variety was the Multi-Grain sprouted tortilla chips. They had a wholesome taste that seemed to fit well with both sweet and savory dips. We liked the Blues and Black Bean snacks, too, which seemed like a perfect match for meals, from nachos to using as an edible spoon for chili.
The more recently created Mustard + Onion was good, but didn’t strike the flavorful mother load as expected. The overall taste was a little too mild and understated. The new Sriracha sprouted tortilla chips sparked our interest a little more, with a nice little kick that packed just the right amount of lightly sweetened heat.
More recently, Way Better Snacks added Pita-ahh Chips to their line-up. Unfortunately, at last check, only one of the flavors (Pinch of Sea Salt) was made without dairy ingredients. I do love that these are made with sprouted red fife wheat, and they do have a nice audible crunch and neutral wholesome flavor that goes perfectly with dip!
Certifications: Way Better Snacks sprouted tortilla chips (not the Pita-ahh chips) are certified gluten-free and OU kosher parve. They are labeled as non-GMO, but do not have the verification on the package.
Dietary Notes: By ingredients, the sprouted tortilla chips (not the pita chips) are dairy-free / non-dairy, egg-free, gluten-free, nut-free, peanut-free, vegan, vegetarian, and generally food allergy-friendly.
