This unique hot chocolate mix has a surprise base ingredient: certified gluten-free oats! The addition makes for a rich consistency and liqueur-like drinking chocolate taste that I found quite fulfilling. Though the oats do impart a slight bitterness, this is offset by versatility (can be a mug muffin mix, too!), nutrition (hot cocoa with fiber?!), and the perfectly sweet organic backdrop of vegan cane sugar and cocoa.

A unique new dairy-free hot chocolate has just launched in time for the holidays, Windy City Cocoa. It comes in single serve packs that I think are perfect for stocking stuffers or warming up after a day of skiing, sledding, or simply battling the elements.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but have learned over the years that no two hot chocolates are alike, and Windy City Cocoa definitely makes its mark for uniqueness. Unlike some other brands and recipes, this one is made without allergens (yes, it’s soy-free, too!) and it really needs just water, no milk beverage or dairy-free cream required. And, it actually contains fiber, as one of the ingredients is gluten-free oats!

The oats add this amazing richness that gives Windy City Cocoa a liqueur-like taste and consistency, almost like a good drinking chocolate. Yet the only other ingredients are organic cane sugar, organic cocoa (from Peru), vanilla powder, and salt. The oats also make this the most versatile hot cocoa mix I’ve ever seen! They have a vegan, gluten-free Mug Chocolate Cake Recipe with just add water and applesauce instructions, and you can make it into a pudding by just reducing the amount of water, using coconut milk or even adding some avocado!

The only drawback of the oats, for me, was the slight bitter taste they impart, but the sweet trade-off for consistency and nutrition are worth it.

  3. This is a great review, Alisa. The funny thing is that I didn’t really think bitter until I read your review. I simply thought oaty. 😉 But it is a bit of bitterness. I easily got past it though. I’m ordering some Windy City Cocoa for Son and myself for Christmas! 🙂 The pudding looks delish, too! I am in love with his new product for many reasons, with one of them being the fact that it uses not just certified gluten-free oats, but purity protocol oats. For folks like me who can’t have any gluten, that is so important.
