Unfortunately, Zen is still in business, but they no longer make soymilk products. Fortunately, Silk Soymilk still comes in singles in Very Vanilla and Chocolate. They also make Unsweetened Almondmilk Singles.
We let Hannah be the lead reviewer for ZenSoy Soy on the Go. I had a feeling this soymlk product was right up her alley, and fortunately, I was right!
To avoid setting my standards too high, I started with the least alluring flavor of ZenSoy Soy on the Go, the Chocolate soymilk. It may surprise some chocoholics that I labeled this flavor as somewhat undesirable, but in my experience, chocolate drinks are either hit or miss. They can be powdery, artificial-tasting, watery, or some unfortunate combination of the three. With some trepidation I swallow my first mouthful of this Soy on the Go, and was so startled by the taste that I nearly spilled it all over my already messy keyboard! Never before had I experienced such a delicious cocoa soymilk. Creamy and smooth with the perfect viscosity, it tasted substantial and satisfying, but not the least bit unctuous. Artificial flavors can’t even touch the distinctly cocoa and authentic sweetness of this soymilk.
On a whim, I popped a glass of this auburn beauty into the microwave for a minute or two. I wondered how it might taste as an instant hot cocoa. It was just like the cocoa I remembered from childhood, even before my days as a vegan. I could easily enjoy this as a delicious remedy for a cold and wet winter day.
Although the chocolate was a surprise success, I still had my doubts about the Vanilla Soy on the Go. Vanilla is truly a delicate spice, often smothered by excessive sweetening. Luckily, ZenSoy delivered a light and refreshing brew tat was miles better than I could have even hoped for. In fact, the carton was drained before I concluded writing my tasting notes! Even so, I can confirm that I would happily include this soymilk in any bowl of cereal or baking application.
Having saved what I was hoping would be the best for last, I plunged the extended plastic straw through the seal of the Cappuccino flavor. Taking a good long swig, I must have lost myself in the moment, because I guzzled down half the container before coming up for air! Lightly flavored with just a hint of coffee, this coffee addict wished for a more robust flavor. Nonetheless, that faint whisper only made me want to drink more to chase that flavor down. In the end, I would classify this Soy on the Go as a serious contender to real coffee house creations. The creamy finish is sophisticated enough for more mature palates, but light enough to please kids, too.
To sum up my review, I absolutely adore this stuff, and may just have to order another case or two soon!
