I first stumbled across Zimt Chocolate Bars at the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco. The energetic owner was eager for us to sample her high-quality product, and it turns out she had reason to be zealous.
Fast forward two years, when I finally obtained two full-size Zimt Chocolate Bars to trial and review (instead of trade show-sized bites!). I had forgotten about the amazing quality of these bars. Not only are they organic, made with raw ethically-sourced ingredients, and vegan (the whole product line!), but Zimt Chocolate Bars are also sweetened purely with coconut sugar.
In fact, the 70% Chocolate (pictured below), which we sampled first, is made only with organic cacao nibs, coconut sugar, and cacao butter – yes, no soy lecithin either! And unlike other brands boasting unrefined sweeteners, Zimt Chocolate Bars are extremely smooth. The 70% had a rich and alluring flavor with coffee-like depth and mellow sweetness that seemed to be void of bitterness. I’d liken it to a “grown-up” chocolate without the harsh bite that is common with many pure chocolate brands.
The Sweet Orange Nib’d is made with the same 70% cacao base, but it’s enhanced with a warm, orange essence that has hints of zest and a bold cacao nib crunch. There is a lot of good interest going on in this bar.
Availability: For me, the one caveat of Zimt Chocolate Bars is the price. When compared dollar for dollar against other organic, vegan chocolate bars, Zimt is about half the size. And ordering online tacks on a hefty shipping charge. This is a Canadian-based company, and if you are in British Columbia, you can likely find Zimt locally for a special indulgence. I realize that good quality doesn’t come cheap, but considering how easy it is to devour Zimt Chocolate Bars, I do hope that their distribution expands and their price is able to drop a couple of dollars into my personal “worth a treat” budget range. To note, we also spotted Zimt Chocolate Bars on Amazon, where shipping appears to be a bit more cost effective for U.S. customers, and individual bars can be purchased.
