Christina – Hello all. I know how hard it is to find a diet that works. I have found one that has worked well for my husband and me. My mother in law also has lost 45 lbs since April. Please remember everyone is different. Christina and her family have been trialing a wheat-free, dairy-free, and “low-meat” diet.  Below are some of her personal…

Galactosemia is an inherited disorder, and it is actually quite rare, with an occurrence of 1 out of every 60,000 births among Caucasians (it does occur in other groups, though this was the only reported number we found).  Nonetheless, it is prevalent enough to make note of, particularly considering the severity of the disorder. During digestion, lactose (a complex milk sugar) is broken down into two simple sugars, glucose and galactose. The galactose and glucose then enter the bloodstream where the galactose is converted in more glucose.  Glucose is used as a primary source of energy for the body. Not…

Jennifer – My two month old son was just diagnosed with Galactosemia. Galactosemia is a metabolic disorder where he lacks the enezyme to break down galactose. He will have to live the rest of his life dairy free. This is not a form of lactose-intolerance. Where lactose intolerance is an allergy, galactosemia is a genetic disorder. People with this disorder cannot break done the sugar in milk–any animal milk. The sugar then builds up in the persons system and becomes toxic. It can cause liver and kidney damage, brain damage, developmental damages, and even death. I am grateful to have…

By Joi Ito – I blogged a decision to become vegan on December 13, 2006 which is approximately six months ago. I’m happy to say that it was the right decision and that I’ve never been healthier or happier as long as I can remember and I intend to continue being a vegan. Other than some allergies, I’ve gotten rid every one of half-a-dozen or so chronic conditions including obesity, fatty liver, high uric acid (gout), heartburn/ulcers/stomach acid, nervous tension, sleeping problems and rising cholesterol. I also have more energy than I’ve ever had. I’ve lost approximately 18 kg (40…

I’d barely even heard of a scone before I met my husband. His Canadian family loves all English foodie pleasures, including tea, crumpets, and scones. Most scones are made with cream, and sometimes butter, but luckily, they’re easy to make without dairy. This basic dairy-free scones recipe, for example, is a great option. Basic Dairy-Free Scones to Serve for Vegan Brunch or Tea Time You’ll want to skip the clotted cream, but there are many other condiments you can serve with these lightly sweet scones. Set out any of the following. Dairy-free Buttery Spread Coconut Whip Cashew Cream Fresh Fruit…

Ah, crackers – so crisp, so crunchy, so… not exactly healthy. But that is where Wasa Hearty Rye Crispbread is very different from other crackers – so different, that the fact that they are referred to as “crispbread” rather than crackers. Most commercial brands of crackers that appear on store shelves have rather long lists of ingredients, and contain hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils (trans-fat alert!), little to no fiber, high fat, sugar, and salt contents, and very little nutrition overall. A product of Sweden, Wasa Crispbread comes in several varieties (such as multi-grain, hearty rye (now called whole grain), light…

Keebler Creme-Filled Vienna Cookies, Vanilla Sugar Wafers, Strawberry Sugar Wafers, and Chocolate Sugar Wafers appear to be made without any dairy (they might even be vegan!) and are still available. Kedem no longer maintains a website, and does not have any product information available. So we can not accurately update and maintain this post. Terra Nostra Chocolate is no longer being produced. “Slightly Unusual. Unusually Good.” is the motto at Chebe, and I must say, they are right on the mark. Chebe Gluten Free Mixes are free of gluten, dairy, yeast, soy, corn, and potato. With this profile, it would be near impossible to expect “typical” results, but what you do get is relatively addictive and tasty. Tasting Notes for Chebe Gluten Free Mixes All of the Chebe Gluten Free Mixes have the same taste and textural vibe, because they’re made with the same light base of tapioca flour and starch. They realistically differ only in their additions. That said, one of…

By Neva Davis at Neva Vegan – The first time I considered becoming vegan my doctor talked me out of it. I was a young vegetarian and at constant war with my mother over it. I was not getting enough calories in general since my mother “wouldn’t prepare any special meals” and sabotaged things like vegetables and rice and potatoes by adding broth or bacon. I was considering transitioning into veganism, without a real understanding of what that meant. My mother marched me off to the doctor so he would tell me I couldn’t be vegetarian. Instead he told me…

This recipe for Asian grilled salmon was shared with us by my friend Janelle, who used to run a blog called Talk of Tomatoes. Alisa Fleming – Sure, why not?  After all, in 1937 National Milk Month was proclaimed for the month of June as a marketing move to push the white stuff.  In 1955, the American Dairy Council took it over and has been running it with sales budgets since.  Last year, the Vegetarian Awareness Network countered Milk Month with what was then called No Dairy Month, with what appears to be no financial motive… Wisely, they took on a more positive approach, renaming the “celebration” to Dairy Alternative Month.  I don’t particularly agree with their choice to combat Milk Month, even going…
