Once upon a time, an adventurous woman named Erin McKenna quit her job and opened one of the first gluten-free, vegan bakeries in the U.S. It was called Babycakes. At that New York location, Erin whisked her way into the hearts of countless special diet customers.
Eventually, Babycakes’ fame propelled Erin to open new locations in Los Angeles and Disney World. A copyright dispute caused her to lose the Babycakes name, but that didn’t slow her down. She painted new signs, and Erin McKenna’s Bakery empire was born.
Erin McKenna’s Bakery Opens 4th Shop for Gluten-Free Vegan Goodies
Today, Erin is opening her fourth location, and it is the grandest of them all. The new Santa Monica bakery has a modest amount of tables for dining in (the other locations only have bar seating), and they will serve new breakfast and lunch menus. Guests can expect to enjoy all of the classics, like pancakes and waffles, French toast, pizza, salads, and mac and cheese. And of course, the bakery case is filled with all of the sweet treats that your heart desires.
Unlike many of the new SoCal eateries, this isn’t a health food restaurant. Erin does source many organic ingredients, and she primarily uses agave nectar and evaporated cane juice (unrefined vegan sugar) for sweetening. But her restaurants still ooze with indulgence.
These Sweet Bakeries have Something for Almost Everyone
Erin McKenna’s daily menus include cupcakes, cakes, brownies, cinnamon rolls, donuts, quick bread, cookies, and muffins. They also swirl vegan soft serve in vanilla, chocolate, or twist, which you can order topped with cookies, brownies, donuts, caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or strawberry sauce.
Everything at Erin McKenna’s Bakeries is gluten-free, dairy-free, and egg-free. They’re also tree nut-free and soy-free establishments with a couple of caveats. They do use Bob’s Red Mill flours, which are packaged on the same equipment with tree nuts and soy. Also, they use coconut oil and coconut milk, which the FDA incorrectly calls a tree nut.
If you’re planning ahead, all of their locations take phone orders, and their Los Angeles and New York locations take online orders. They also bake specialty cakes on request.
