Freddy’s Makes Dairy-Free Customers Flip for Steakburgers & Sandwiches

By Alisa Fleming on January 23, 2023 Dining Out, Suggested Restaurants, U.S. Restaurants

Updated January 2023! If you’re craving a good old-fashioned burger, then Freddy’s could be your spot. It’s a chain that began in the Midwest and serves typical American fast casual fare. The Frozen Custard is out for dairy-free diners, but Freddy’s does make many Steakburgers, Sandwiches, and Sides without milk. We’ve compiled the options, with notes, into this milk-free quick guide.

Dairy-Free Menu Guide for Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers with Allergen Notes and Vegan Options

Dairy-Free Menu Guide for Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers

Freddy’s Steakburgers are made with 100% premium beef and hand-crafted when you order. Their patties have thin, crispy edges and a thicker middle. This menu guide includes dairy-free menu options first, followed by custom order components. Be aware of special order requirements in parentheses () next to the menu items, and see the Heads Up notes to help fill in the blanks.

Butter Note: According to the company, Freddy’s does not use dairy butter on their grill or buns as a policy. As always, individual locations can take liberties. Always check that they don’t use dairy butter on your order. Keep in mind, some might use a “butter” that doesn’t contain dairy. Verify ingredients with the staff.

Other Allergen & Dietary Notes: All of the items listed below are made without egg, gluten, nuts, peanuts, and soy, unless otherwise noted. For vegan options, see the Vegan Menu Guide at the bottom of this post.

    Steakburgers

    • Steakburger, any size (no cheese) (contains gluten, soy)
    • Bacon Double Steakburger (no cheese) (contains gluten, soy)
    • California Steakburger, any size (no cheese) (contains egg, gluten, soy)
    • Jalapeno Steakburger, any size (no cheese) (contains egg, gluten, soy)
    • Patty Melt (no cheese) (contains gluten, soy)
    • Veggie Burger (no cheese) (contains egg, gluten, soy)

Heads Up!  The burgers are served on Freddy’s buns, which have a potential cross-contamination warning for milk. The Rye Bread does not. You can also order any burger in a lettuce wrap. Their patties alone are made without top allergens.

    Hot Dogs

    • Hot Dog (contains gluten, soy)
    • Chicago Style Hot Dog (contains gluten, soy)
    • Chili Dog (no cheese) (contains gluten, soy)

    Chicken

    • Chicken Tenders (contains gluten)
    • Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich (contains gluten, soy)

Heads Up! The Chicken Tenders are cooked in a shared fryer with Freddy’s Onion Rings, which do contain milk (whey). The Crispy Chicken Sandwich Fillets now contain milk. The Grilled Chicken Sandwich is served on Freddy’s buns, which have a potential cross-contamination warning for milk. You can order no bun or swap in rye bread, if desired. You can also order any sandwich in a lettuce wrap.

    Sides

    • Freddy’s Fries
    • Chili (no cheese) (contains soy)
    • Chili Fries (no cheese) (contains soy)
    • Applesauce
    • Baked Lay’s Original

Heads Up! The Fries are cooked in a shared fryer with Freddy’s Onion Rings, which do contain milk (whey).

    Condiments & Toppings

    • Bacon
    • BBQ Sauce
    • Freddy’s Fry Sauce (contains egg)
    • Freddy’s Jalapeno Fry Sauce (contains egg)
    • Freddy’s Seasoning
    • Honey Mustard Dressing (contains soy)
    • Marinara (contains soy)
    • Mayonnaise (contains egg)
    • Relish
    • Sautéed Onions (contains soy)
    • Thousand Island Dressing (contains egg)

Heads Up! The Ranch Dressing does contain milk.

    Bread & Buns

    • Hamburger Buns (see Heads Up below) (contains gluten, soy)
    • Hot Dog Buns (contains gluten)
    • Rye Bread (contains gluten, soy)

Heads Up! Freddy’s has waffled back and forth over the years with their buns. They were dairy-free, then we were told they contain dairy. And now they are listed as dairy-free again, but have a “contains an ingredient that was manufactured in a plant that uses that allergen” warning for milk (from the manufacturer, not the grill). Their Toasted Rye Bread and Hot Dog Buns do not have a potential cross-contamination warning, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still at risk.

    Dessert (Toppings & Cones)

    • Cake Cone (contains gluten)
    • Waffle Cone (contains gluten, soy)
    • Almonds
    • Banana
    • Banana Syrup
    • Brownies (contains egg, gluten)
    • Cashews (contains soy)
    • Cherry Topping
    • Chocolate Syrup
    • Coconut
    • Coffee Flavoring
    • Gummi Worms
    • Macadamia Nuts
    • Malt Syrup (contains gluten)
    • Marshmallow (contains egg)
    • Mint Syrup
    • Oreo (contains gluten, soy)
    • Oreo Wafer (contains gluten, soy)
    • Peanut Butter
    • Peanuts
    • Pecans
    • Pineapple Topping
    • Rainbow Sprinkles (contains soy)
    • Strawberry Topping

Heads Up! Although Freddy’s has all types of dairy-free toppings, they don’t have any dairy-free frozen custard flavors! Hopefully they will add a vegan frozen dessert option in the future!

Bummer, looks like they now use buns with dairy. The Steakburger without the bun appears to still be dairy-free.

The bread isn’t dairy free. We put a super thin butter layer on the bottom of the top bun and then toast it.
