It can be hard to find a good value right in the heart of Waikiki, but Oahu Mexican Grill (OMG) delivers on taste, quality, price, and dairy-free options. The cost might not be quite as low as your local street taco establishment, but for Waikiki it’s a deal, especially considering the ingredients and portion sizes.

Oahu Mexican Grill uses only grass-fed free-range beef, all-natural meats (no added hormones, steroids, or antibiotics), and their culinary-trained chefs make all of their salsas and guacamole from fresh produce delivered daily. Even their frozen margaritas are homemade and all-natural.

And according to the owner, “everything but the cheese” is dairy-free at this casual establishment. Okay, we think they have sour cream and a few dairy-containing sweets. But when we were there, all of their other toppings (including the guacamole), sauces, meats, and sides were dairy-free. We double checked, and all of their meat marinades are made without dairy, but they did let us know that some of them contain gluten.

They also have numerous vegan options, including two different types of rice and beans, and their roasted blend of vegetables. It’s usually made with potatoes, carrots, and assorted bell peppers, but can change with the seasons.

This is a Tex-Mex restaurant with a build-your-own type menu where you pick your protein, toppings, and sides, if you order a combo. They make burritos, tacos, bowls, salads, and plates, or you can order from their chips and dips menu for a shareable snack. In the morning, they have a full breakfast menu with some dairy-free items.

Oahu Mexican Grill also has ample seating and a good atmosphere for relaxing with a cold drink on a hot day. You can choose from their full bar with cervezas and margaritas, or enjoy a cool, creamy glass of their house-made dairy-free horchata.

Daily Food and Drink Specials Are on Tap at OMG

We ventured in on a Taco Tuesday to sample their dairy-free food selection. The $3 street tacos they offer are smaller than their full-priced daily tacos, but they’re very generously filled. Tony and I each decided to order three, which stuffed us. The flavors were fantastic, and the ingredients tasted very fresh.

I thought they handled the preparation well. Each taco was placed on it’s own foil, and the staff changed their gloves before preparing my order. They did a great job of sequestering any dairy to its own container, but of course, make sure the ingredients and preparation are safe for your own needs.

We tried a sample of the dairy-free horchata. It is rice and almond-based, and has a very creamy finish. It’s sweet, and dessert-like, but also refreshing.

If you want to indulge in an adult beverage without breaking the bank, OMG has a daily happy hour from 3 to 6pm when they offer $2 off all drafts and homemade frozen margaritas. And margaritas are discounted all day on Mondays.

Where to Find Oahu Mexican Grill

OMG is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and can be found on the east end of main drag in Waikiki, facing the ocean. They have a small entrance on the street, usually with a sign posted, that takes you upstairs to their restaurant on the second floor.

Everything tastes fresh at OMG. I love that they use grass-fed, hormone-free, and antibiotic-free meats, and the marinades are very flavorful – you can really taste the quality. I like the taco Tuesday because the tacos are a la carte (not a big rice & beans on the side fan), but for any day, the bowls are great.
