We've updated this recipe to make it easier and more versatile. Just be sure to pick a good quality chocolate that suits your dietary needs (our Dairy-Free Chocolate Chip Guide can help!). I prefer to use a smoother chocolate that isn't too high in cacao.

Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: Swiss
Serves: 10 servings
Ingredients
  • 1 (10-ounce) bag dairy-free chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (see Chocolate Options below)
  • ½ cup coconut milk (regular, full-fat, canned) or coconut cream, plus additional as needed (see Coconut-Free Options below)
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract (see Flavor Options below)
Instructions
  1. Start with a double boiler or a mixing bowl that fits on top of a saucepan (see this chocolate melting guide for an example). Put a few inches of water in the saucepan and bring it to a slow boil. Place the mixing bowl or double boiler on top of the boiling water and pour in the coconut milk.
  2. Once the coconut milk is hot, add the chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in more coconut milk or cream if the mixture seems too thick. Whisk in the vanilla and any other flavoring (see Flavor Options below).
  3. Pour the chocolate mixture into your fondue pot and light the candle to keep your chocolate warm. On casual nights, just serve the fondue in the double boiler or mixing bowl set up. You might need to gently reheat it if the fondue starts to set up.
  4. Skewer your goodies of choice and give them a dunk!
Notes
Chocolate Options: We prefer semi-sweet chocolate for this recipe, but if you are a diehard cacao fan, you can use a smooth dairy-free dark chocolate (55 to 70%). We haven’t tested this recipe with dairy-free milk chocolate alternative, but it would likely be delicious!
Coconut-Free Options: Substitute dairy-free creamer (preferably unsweetened), dairy-free half and half, or your favorite dairy-free milk beverage (preferably unsweetened) for the coconut milk and add 2 tablespoons of dairy-free buttery spread, non-hydrogenated shortening, or nut butter (influences the flavor more).
Flavor Options: You can add other extracts, like peppermint, almond, or orange, to taste. You can also add ½ to 1 tablespoon alcohol, like amaretto or brandy. You can also add a little sea salt, if desired!
